Forget ombre or balayage, it seems a new hair trend is taking root amongst the celebs of Hollywood.

For Nicole Richie has followed in the footsteps of Kelly Osbourne and Ireland Baldwin by dying her hair a shocking purple colour.

The fashion designer modeled her new look as she stepped out to lunch with her husband Joel Madden on Thursday.

Perhaps thinking that the violet of her hair was decoration enough, Nicole otherwise kept her outfit low key.

Revealing her skinny legs in jeans ripped at the knees, she completed her outfit with a grey sweater and jacket, and a simple pair of flats.

Sweeping her newly dyed locks back in a bun, Nicole covered her face with a pair of shades.

While it is not an easy look to wear, purple hair appears to be the latest thing in Hollywood.

While Kelly O has rocked the look for years, just this week model Ireland also unveiled her bright new look.

And days later Nicole took to Twitter to reveal she had also been at the salon.

'About last night...' she tweeted, with a picture of her hair.

The 32-year-old has regularly played around with her hair colour in the past. But it seems this time it was a bet with her pal Kelly that persuaded her to take the plunge.

Kelly posted a photo with the daughter of Lionel Richie and captioned it, 'Guess took the bet & dyed there hair MY color @nicolerichie.'  The color is quite similar to Osbourne's trademark tinge.

The Fashion Police star has been coloring her hair a pale hue of purple since early 2012.

Richie, who was blonde in when she co-starred with Paris Hilton in the Simple Life, went snow white for the Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in May of last year.  She has also worn her hair black and brown.

Others to have dabbled with the purple shade include Avril Lavigne, Demi Lovato, and of course the wig-loving Nicki Minaj.
