There can only be a few places worse for a polite kiss to go wrong than on stage where everyone can see.

But unfortunately that is exactly what happened to Kate Beckinsale when she presented Sir Ben Kingsley with a special gong at a fundraiser in Beverly Hills on Thursday.

The actors were photographed in the awkward embrace when there double kiss on the cheek appeared a little misplaced at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's What You Do Matters dinner.

The incident happened as the 40-year-old handed over his United Leadership Award, however the pair later recovered well.

The award was a big thank you for the 70-year-old actor's contribution to advance awareness for the organisation's cause of Holocaust memory through his roles in such films as Murderers Among Us: The Simon Wiesenthal Story and Schindler's List..

Meanwhile, as one of the most beautiful actresses in show business, Kate showed just how to make an entrance when she arrived on the red carpet earlier in the evening.

Putting her beauty to good use, the mother-of-one helped drum up some money for charity at the star-studded dinner.

Kate was draped in a Marchesa gown of gorgeous creamy satin with flowering vine textured detail in deep red that set off her olive complexion perfectly.

Her strapless gown was tea length but featured a trailing train that provided dramatic effect, complimented by blush-tinted pumps and burgundy clutch.

Kate's dark brown locks were gathered in a relaxed updo that allowed curling strands to fall across her bare shoulders.

The Underworld star's glamourous appearance was but one highlight at the event that served to honour those who have worked tirelessly for the cause.

Meanwhile, Kate was dressed down - but no less impressive - as she stepped out to celebrate husband Len Wiseman's 41st birthday on Tuesday at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles.

Joining them was Kate's former longtime partner, actor Michael Sheen, who made it a curious trio.

Kate had an eight-year relationship with the Masters Of Sex star during which they welcomed the birth of their daughter LIly, now 14.

Although they split in 2003, they still get along fabulously and both Len and Sheen are father figures to Lily.

'We were very lucky in that we didn't have an acrimonious split,' Kate told UK's The Mirror. 'We are still very close and she sees us around each other. She's around them both at the same time and it's not at all weird.

'From what I can gather from her she feels very lucky to have two fathers and is a bit sorry for the children who only have one.'

Beautiful woman inside and out, love Kingsley too. I have to admit in the photo where Kate was leaning in for a kiss it looked like she was going to eat him, a good for a chuckle.

........."when there double kiss on the cheek ".........SORRY??? It took two people to write this article and they can't even get the right spelling of their!! Surely no-one can take this paper seriously. Every day I'm shocked at the grammar or spelling at some point on this site.
