He's in town to film mega-budget movie Gods Of Egypt, and Gerard Butler has decided on his favourite new hangout.

The Olympus Has Fallen star enjoyed the atmosphere at the Royal Hotel in Paddington on both Friday and Saturday night.

But rather than ordering schooners of beer the 44-year-old, who has admitted to a heavy boozing past, instead opted to stick with glasses of sparkling water.

The handsome Scot caused a stir when he first arrived at the popular Sydney pub on Friday night, but a Royal Hotel bartender told the MailOnline the film star seemed unfazed by the attention.

'We were all a bit excited as you can imagine,' the staff member said. 'But he was very tolerant of everyone harassing him asking to get a picture.'

Butler spent the evening sitting on the balcony with a small group, arriving before 5pm and staying until around 10pm.

So staff and patrons were surprised when the Hollywood heavyweight returned again on Saturday night - although this time he was accompanied by two security guards.

Again the star enjoyed the atmosphere with five or six friends, although this time from the rooftop.

The next day the handsome star was seen walking on George Street in the city.

Butler looked rugged and ready for action as he touched down in Sydney last week.

He sported a beard and wore a leather jacket as he made his way through the airport on Sunday.

But despite the hours he spent in the air, he still managed to crack a smile.

In Gods Of Egypt he stars as Set, the ancient Egyptian god of chaos and violence.

He will appear alongside Geoffrey Rush and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the action fantasy flick that has an estimated budget of $150 million.
