As Thor, he's used to pulling off demanding moves in a muscle-revealing costume.

And it seems Chris Hemsworth is happy to do the same on his day off, after he was spotted surfing at a beach in Los Angeles, California on Saturday.

The 30-year-old showed off his athletic physique in a black wetsuit as he rode the waves with friends.

The native Australian grew up surfing, and it was easy to tell as he pulled off several tricky maneuvers, despite taking more than one tumble.

Chris wasn't joined by his wife Elsa Pataky, 37, on his surf trip but she was spotted enjoying a relaxing family beach day on Sunday.

The Fast And The Furious star looked cool and comfortable - despite the fact she is carrying twins - in a short black beach dress and floppy hat.

She was joined by 18-month-old daughter India Rose and brother-in-law Luke Hemsworth, 32, who is famous back in his homeland as an actor on popular daytime soap Neighbours.

There was no sign of the third Hemsworth brother, 24-year-old Liam, although the three siblings attended the Vanity Fair Oscars party together last week.

Speaking to GQ Magazine, Chris revealed that he has had several near-death experiences while surfing.

'I've surfed a couple of times where I've been pinned under a reef and I'm right at the end of my breath, and there's nothing else you want to see more than the surface,' Hemsworth revealed.

'I've surfed most of my life and without a doubt there's been sharks in the water when I've been there. I've never seen a shark, but there's no doubt there would've been one around,' he added.

The busy actor won critical acclaim last year as another daredevil, racing driver James Hunt, in Ron Howard's Rush.

He is currently slated to appear in four upcoming projects which are in various stages of production.

2015 will see Chris don his superhero cape once more as he takes up his role as Thor in Avengers: Age of Ultron alongside Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr.

He is also set to star in Cyber, which follows teams of American and Chinese computer experts who join forces to defeat high-level computer hackers.
