David Beckham has become the new face of British luxury sport-car maker Jaguar as it spearheads a major drive into China.

The former England captain has been named as Jaguar’s new ‘brand ambassador’ to the vast country where he hopes to put the ‘leaping cat’ marque on the map of the world’s most populous nation with 1.34billion citizens.

His first role will see him launching the sexy new Jaguar F-TYPE Coupé in China following its global unveiling in in London last month.

Jaguar says Beckham's role will develop and will see him feature in many Jaguar sales campaigns in the coming years, including those for the flagship Jaguar XJ limousine.

Indeed the firm recently signed a deal to build its cars in China at a new factory near Shanghai.

Beckham has confirmed that he will buy a team in America and hopefully take them to the MLS and play in Miami.

It’s not the Beckham family’s first brush with Jaguar Land Rover. In November 2012 his wife and former ‘Spice Girl’ pop singer Victoria ‘Posh’ Beckham designed and launched in China a special limited edition Range Rover Evoque at the Beijing Motor Show.

On the start of this new partnership with Jaguar, David Beckham said: ‘I’ve always been an admirer of Jaguar - from the styling and design to the feel and roar of the engine, every element feels uniquely British.

‘I love the classic E-Type of the 60s and today this legacy is alive in the phenomenal F-TYPE Coupé, a car that epitomises British craftsmanship.

‘It’s an honour to support a brand with such an amazing heritage and I look forward to being part of Jaguar’s exciting future in China.’

The Beckham deal continues a footballing association for Jaguar. Last month Chelsea manager José Mourinho became the first customer to take delivery of an F-Type coupe after its official UK launch in London.

Bob Grace, Jaguar Land Rover China Managing Director, said: ‘We are absolutely thrilled that David will be an ambassador for Jaguar in China.

‘David Beckham is a Briton whose achievements mean he has global popularity and he is someone who embodies contemporary British style and sophistication.

‘He is a truly modern, British individual with a genuine passion for design, innovation, performance and driving.’

Indeed, but at least they're famous, popular and advocating products, designed, developed and built in England. Ok, so Jag's owned by Tata, but still built in Coventry.
