Staggering transformation of rescued stray dog after passers-by assumed he was trash

His rescuers thought at first he was a discarded toy or even a piece of garbage - but on closer inspection they realized it was a little King Charles Cavalier having a seriously ruff time of it.

Found roaming the streets of Montreal last week, the little mut's coat had grown so thick and caked in filth that he was almost unrecognizable as a pedigree dog.

Picked up by the Quebec Society for the Protection of Animals and given a bath and a very close shave, the dog was transformed from hobo to regal in a matter of moments.

His rescuers estimated that more than 50-percent of the decrepit animal they were staring at was due to the size of his fur and cutting it off proved to be more difficult than the first imagined.

The poor dog was frightened by the buzzer - presumably after a life of terrible neglect that had seen him thrown out onto the streets of Quebec's largest city.

After his long-overdue beauty treatment the dog was left to sleep off the stressful haircut - changed from the dog that one passer-by assumed was a pile of trash.

Time for a break: Understandably the process began to frighten the dog as his years worth of hair were removed by the razor

There is no better feeling than taking in a rescued dog and watching him learn what love is. I adopted a 4 month old boxer mix puppy last year that was found with rubber bands sunken into his skin around his mouth and abandoned in the winter. He's the sweetest dog I've ever had.

Poor baby looks like he escaped a hoarder or puppy mill. :( I hope he has a long, happy, healthy life ahead with lots of love and belly rubs. :)

Irrelevant but that's not a King Charles Cavalier. Looks more like a Shih Tzu.

I hope he gets a great home and overcomes all the years of abuse. To have his fur matted that bad took several years.
