Friday Box Office: 'Noah' an Easy Number One, Hasta La Vista to Arnold's 'Sabotage'

For the first time since before Thanksgiving, box office revenues for a weekend will fall short of last year. Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" (Paramount) will dominate the top 10, with Friday's take at $15,238,000 (including Thursday evening shows). With the only other wide opener "Sabotage" (Open Road) at #7 with $1,825,000, grosses were down 30% from the same Friday in 2013.

'The Raid 2': A Fight Between So Cool and Way Too Long (NYT VIDEO)

Gareth Evans' "The Raid 2," which debuted to much internet fanfare at this past Sundance, is at once hypnotically kinetic and groaningly overlong. Indeed, that's the main fight being fought in the film -- between its terrific, fast-paced action sequences and its dragging plot setup.

Cinematographer Matthew Libatique Talks Ark and Arcs in 'Noah'

Darren Aronofsky has always been drawn to the mystical, and "Noah" is even ballsier than "Pi" or "The Fountain." Of course, it's divisive as environmental allegory and the conflict between religion and science. But I think it's a powerful evocation of creation and destruction, love and beauty, and the difficulty of raising a family. Talk about survival and rebirth: It's the ultimate road movie, according to cinematographer Matthew Libatique, who's shot every Aronofsky movie but "The Wrestler" because of a temporary rift.
