Early Results from Bethlehem, PA

By Kurt Wolfheimer at ringside

In a give and take welterweight turf war, former IBF welterweight champion Kermit “El Asesino” Cintron (35-5-2, 28 KOs) of Reading, PA outslugged rugged local scrapper Ronald Cruz (20-3, 15 KOs) of Bethlehem, PA to capture a ten round unanimous decision by scores of 96-94 across the board.

Unbeaten lightweight Karl “Dynamite” Dargan (15-0, 7 KOs) captured a methodical, but one-sided eight round unanimous decision over Chazz McDowell (6-5-1, 1 KO). The former two-time US amateur champion won by scores of 80-72 across the board.

In a battle of undefeated southpaws, Brandon Williams appeared to have outworked hometown favorite Jerome Rodriquez over six rounds to capture this hard fought junior welterweight contest. The judges saw it differently, as one official surprisingly had it 58-57 in favor of Rodriquez. The second official had it 59-55 Williams while the third judge saw it 57-57 for the split draw. Rodriquez slides to 6-0-3, 2KOs while Brandon Williams moves to 3-0-1.

In the opening bout of the evening, undefeated welterweight Nathaniel Rivas upped to his record to 3-0, 1 KO with a third round stoppage of Terrell James (1-2-1). The steady combinations from Rivas eventually wore down James. Rivas hurt James with a left hook. James had his back to the ropes as Rivas unloaded with four unanswered shots. Referee Shawn Clark had seen enough and stepped in and called a halt to the contest at 2:37 of the third round.
