She likes to keep her private life exactly that.

But Shay Mitchell has no such reticence when it comes to talking about the love affairs of her lesbian character Emily on Pretty Little Liars.

Talking on Bethenny Frankel's chat show on Friday, she revealed she enjoyed the role: 'It's great, it's amazing.  It's a lot of fun, I have a lot of awesome co-stars I get to work with.'

And the 26-year-old Canadian said she isn't phased when she's asked to do a romantic scene.

She told the host: 'Everyone's like, how does it feel to kiss another girl?  I'm like, it feels normal, it's fine, yeah.

'Sometimes I’d rather kiss another girl than I would some random guy I don't know. They smell pretty, they have cute lip balm on.

'Emily is quite the player on the show so it's always fun.'

The ABC Family series follows the lives of four girls played by Shay, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson and Lucy Hale who are haunted by the mystery disappearance of their friend.

And Shay had no idea when she was cast four years ago that the show, based on Sara Shepard's bestsellers, would become such a huge hit.

She said: 'I knew there was a big fan base with the books and everything, but no. With Twitter, it just is blowing up social media…but it's great because we get to connect to our fans and stuff like that.'

The brunette, who looked cute in a sleeveless little black dress with a sparkly collar, revealed the girls are good friends off screen.

'You think that after four years of shooting that the girls would all be like cat fights, and that's what a lot of people want to say but it's like a sisterhood. We are so supportive of one another and it's just really really fun.'

Shay has been dating boyfriend Ryan Silverstein for about six months, although they have been keeping their relationship private.

Ryan is a pal of Canadian rapper Drake and hangs with the star and his OVO crew.

I think abc family needs to take the word "family" out of it's name. Go ahead and be lesbian or gay if you want to but kids shouldn't even be exposed to a lot of the things that abc family is showing right now. If you think that shows with murder, sex scenes, and swearing in them is a good idea for families with kids then you seriously need help. To me a good family channel is clean, innocent and fun for everyone at the same time.

I agree with the murder, swearing, sex scenes but kids being exposed to gay couples has nothing to do with it. I work with kids aged 7 - 12 and I tell them about my friends who are gay, it's good for them to learn about that sort of thing. I've said if any of them have any questions they can talk to me about it. Sometimes children don't know what's going on in their heads, and seeing something on tv clears it up for them.

Perhaps you could try monitoring what your children watch? 'Family' does not just mean parents and young children,

Shay is gorgeous! I think it would definitely be easier to kiss a girl than a random guy- she is right there! This show is still so addictive!
