Is she the right person to play a Native American princess?

Critics on social media are less than happy about Wednesday's news that Rooney Mara has been cast as Tiger Lily in Pan, a live-action adaptation of the classic fairytale.

And they are taking to Twitter and other Internet sites to complain, according to The New York Daily News on Friday.

The outlet quoted one internet commenter as writing: 'Rooney Mara cast as Tiger Lily in new Peter Pan film because there are clearly no Native American actresses.'

It quoted another as crediting the 28-year-old with being an 'an incredibly gifted, insightful artist. But come on. You couldn't find a Native American actress to play Tiger Lily?!?!'

Rooney is best known for playing pierced and eyebrow-less computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. chose the Bedford, New York-born beauty over Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o and Blue Is The Warmest Color's Adele Exarchopoulos.

The world being created is apparently very different to the classic Disney cartoon.

The film, due for release in July 2015, tells the origin story of Peter Pan, the mischievous boy who never grows up.

Tiger Lily is the princess of a tribe of Native Americans that live on the island of Neverland with Peter and the Lost Boys.

Hugh Jackman has been cast as Blackbeard and Garrett Hedlund will portray Peter's arch-enemy Hook.

The main villain in this film is said to be Blackbeard despite Peter's long history with Captain Hook.

The title character has yet to be cast but will likely be a boy between 10 and 12 years old.

Joe Wright, who directed Atonement and Pride & Prejudice, will helm the fantasy film.

Peter Pan first appeared in Scottish author J.M. Barrie's book The Little White Bird, published in 1902. The character got his own novel in 1911.

Rooney was recently seen in Oscar award-winning film Her opposite Joaquin Phoenix.

The sister of Kate Mara also has a few films on tap including the sequel to 2011's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo: The Girl Who Played With Fire.

They chose Jim Caviezel, an Irish/Swiss American, to play Jesus, a Jewish man. Nobody had a problem with that.

What is the problem. She looks like Tiger Lily. The only problem people have it that she is Caucasian.

So... Transgender (all 50 flavours) is totally acceptable, but a transrace voiceover is totally unacceptable. And, if you're a native-born American you're only a native American if you're of Native American descent. Wow. If only the Yanks had put that much thought into electing their leader.

I'm sure there is a Native American actress that is perfect for this role I'm really sick of the whitewashing of characters they've gotten so used to it soon as a poc is case in anything they're outraged

America is scared of native Indians, they are scared they would find rights and get places in their own land. Do not allow them to speak, be seen or even have jobs. They get treated worst than blacks and mexicans and that takes some doing, especially in their own land.

I wish the PC brigade would get a laugh, its a film, people act... it would be very un PC to exclude people for trying out for something based on race wouldnt it?
