As most of the people of Des Moines lay sleeping at 7am on Sunday morning, a six-year-old flipped a switch that brought down a nearly 100-year-old building in a matter of seconds.

The demolition of the Iowa Methodist School of Nursing had been planned for weeks, according to CNN.

The implosion lasted only 18 seconds, with a cloud of dust kicking up for about 30 minutes afterward.

Cancer patient Joey Mausser pushed the button after his parents bid on the opportunity at a recent charity gala.

According to David Zinser, president of demolition contractor DW Zinser Company, which orchestrated the most important part was removing windows to ensure glass didn't spray out at the time of the blast.

Zinser also said that it's rare, these days, to execute an implosion.

'I've been doing this my whole life and you don't always get to do an implosion, so every so many years you plan for it and it's a neat event,' he said.

The school has not been active since 1999, when the last year graduated.

Since then it has been used as office space.

I bet that Joey had a smile a mile wide after that :-) Reminds me of that recording of a young Irish girl who was a real prankster, and phoned a demolition company...to see if they would demolish her school for her :-)

I'd say that building was more like 10 years old rather than 100 years old.
