It was on Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s yacht moored in Cannes on the French Riviera that L’Wren Scott and Mick Jagger seemed most in love.

Some of the women on the yacht were wearing clothes L’Wren had designed and they were seeking her out to pay their compliments.

Mick was getting a huge kick out of this universal acclaim.

‘She has a fabulous eye for style. That’s how we first met,’ he was saying to other guests. Then he told how his girlfriend had styled his own clothes when the Stones were on tour.

The first time I saw the couple together was at a party in West Hollywood. I could see Jagger and the silhouette of a statuesque beauty. For a nano-second, I thought he and Jerry Hall were back together again. But then I realised it was L’Wren.

I had seen her around the showbiz ‘scene’ for years. One minute she’d be in Paris on jobs as a stylist; the next she’d be working for Prada in the US.

Even though Jagger has his ‘needs’ (as they are euphemistically called) and pursues them as discreetly as he can, he and L’Wren always appeared ‘lovey-dovey and happy together’, as one friend put it last night.

They always seemed to be holding hands whenever I saw them, whether it was in Cannes during the film festival or at the endless parties for the Golden Globes and the Oscars.

Jagger would be beaming with pride if L’Wren was dressing a star for the next day’s awards show. ‘Can’t tell anything,’ he’d say, winking.

Then, when I saw him on the red carpet, he would chortle: ‘She dressed me, too,’ pointing to L’Wren’s other clothes-horses, the actress Nicole Kidman or TV host Oprah Winfrey.

Kidman confided in me that she believed out of all the world’s designers, L’Wren was the best at creating gowns for her. ‘She understands how a woman likes to move about and understands the silhouette we want to project. She’s an artist that way.’

Mick enjoyed the compliments paid to her, as if it validated his astuteness in picking her as his girlfriend. For make no mistake, this is how it usually works with Mick Jagger: He picks his women.

Originally, L’Wren was happy to be picked, although she impressed him by making it clear that she had a reputation and an identity of her own and didn’t always want to be defined by her association with a Rolling Stone.

Although, ironically, that is exactly what has happened with her death.

What I don't understand is how such a hugely successful fashion designer could end up so badly in debt?
