He may be one of Hollywood's biggest stars but seems Jake Gyllenhaal feared he would not be recognised at his own film premiere.

The 33-year-old actor made sure to style his impressive facial hair to look exactly like his character in Enemy - the movie he was on the red carpet to promote.

The star even made sure to stand in front of the poster baring his bearded face in Madrid, Spain, on Thursday.

Perhaps he just missed seeing his double, considering Jake plays two roles in the unusual independent film.

Based on Portuguese author José Saramago's novel, The Double, Jake stars as a bored and downtrodden history professor who spots his double in a movie and then sets out to find the bit actor before things turn sinister.

For his red carpet walk, the Donnie Darko star did change his hair slightly, which he has had to grow out for his other movie, Everest.

The 33-year-old slicked back his hair, parting it in the middle and allowing the slightly curl ends to flick out just above his collar.

Despite his scruffy appearance, Jake did make sure to suit up, wearing a blue perfectly tailored suit with an open collared white shirt and distressed lace up boots.

The combination gave the star a masculine edge but still ensured he looked dressed up - especially compared to the ladies who also walked the carpet.

There was a distinct streetwear feel to the looks worn by the woman on Thursday night.

Making sure all eyes were on her, Spanish singer Ruth Lorenzo not only skipped wearing a dress, but also skipped wearing pants too.

The 31-year-old - who came fifth in the fifth British version of The X Factor - wore just a Miami Heat basketball singlet with nothing else but a pair of black high heels.

Going for a more classy version of street chic, Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas wore a pair of high waisted blue jeans with a slightly sheer sparkly black knit top under a leather jacket with matching black leather boots.
