At last, cool Kate Winslet wins the ultimate accolade - from her 13-year-old daughter

By Mail On Sunday Diary

She's been a Hollywood  A-lister for years, but Kate Winslet has only just become a ‘cool mum’ in the eyes of daughter Mia.

The 38-year-old, confessed that Mia, 13, has only now shown interest in her career after her role in Divergent, based on Veronica Roth’s trilogy of sci-fi novels for teenagers.

‘She’s really excited about this,’ said Kate.

‘She’s at the age where she and her friends are reading these types of books, and she came home from school the other day all excited, and said, “Mum, you’re not going to believe this, but a boy called Rufus asked if you were really going to be in Divergent and could you get some tickets”.

‘It was sweet because I could see the cogs whirring away in her head, and her thinking, “Hmm, this sort of thing could really work for me at school…” But it’s really nice for me, too, to be a cool mum at last.’

Divergent opens in the UK on April 4.

Amanda Abbington, the long-term partner of The Hobbit  star Martin Freeman, has finally paid off her £120,000  debts.

Despite living with Freeman – who is worth an estimated £10 million – the mother of two, right, declared herself bankrupt  last year.

But after landing lucrative roles in ITV series Mr Selfridge  and in Martin’s hit TV drama Sherlock, she is back in the black.

‘It’s all been sorted out now,’ said Amanda, 40, last week at The Company Of Dogs exhibition in London, which features celebrities who have been photographed with their pets to raise money for the Dogs Trust charity.

‘Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.’

House Of Cards creator Michael Dobbs is so impressed with Kevin Spacey in the US adaptation of his political thriller that he says he has ‘fallen in love’ with him.

Tory peer Dobbs also thinks Spacey is better in the lead role than the late Ian Richardson was in the original BBC mini-series.

‘Ian was a superb actor and a very nice man, but now I’ve fallen in love with someone even better,’ said Dobbs at the Total Politics Political Book Awards, where he won the outstanding achievement prize. ‘It’s just a privilege to be associated with Kevin.’
