Mother-daughter bonding: Kristen Stewart sports a rare smile while filming new movie Still Alice at the beach with on-screen mom Julianne Moore

By Juliet Paylor

Usually sullen Kristen Stewart cracked a rare smile as she filmed scenes with on-screen mom Julianne Moore on Friday for their new movie, Still Alice.

But more shocking was the fact that her grin didn't disappear the moment the cameras stopped rolling.

The 23-year-old flashed her pearly whites to onlookers as she strolled the boardwalk in Long Beach, New York on the breezy morning, the ocean air gently tousling her long chestnut locks.

The actresses are deep in the thick of shooting their new project, which also stars Alec Baldwin and Kate Bosworth, with the action having recently moved from the busy streets of Manhattan to the nearby tranquil beachside location.

The premise of the film - an adaptation of the Lisa Genova novel - sees cognitive psychologist
Dr Alice Howland, played by Moore, face the early onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Through her diagnosis, she forms an unexpectedly deep and special bond with her youngest daughter Lydia - played by Stewart.

Natural beauty: The striking star looked lovely with just a minimal covering of fresh make-up, her chestnut tresses styled in messy, beachy waves to match her casual outfit of grey sweater rolled at the cuffs and dark green cargo pants

And that bond was certainly evident as the pair strolled along together, sharing a wholehearted laugh.

The 53-year-old was wearing the same plaid shirt from the previous day's shooting, though rather than jeans, this time it was worn open, over a green and white patterned maxi-dress, despite the decidedly cool conditions.

Her long fiery red locks were worn in an unkempt straight style, while she appeared to be wearing very little make-up over her porcelain skin.

Convincing: The actresses, who play mother and daughter united by tragedy in the film adaptation of the Lisa Genova novel, spent the morning happily laughing and chatting away as they filmed in the sunshine

Two-of-a-kind: The pair could easily have passed for family with their similar style and porcelain complexions, with the 53-year-old sporting unkempt straight locks, minimal make-up and a plaid shirt over her green and white patterned maxi-dress

Her younger co-star kept it simple in a grey sweatshirt that was rolled up at the cuffs and a dark green pants.

She also sported just a minimal covering of natural make-up and wore her hair in messy, beachy waves with a sideswept part.

At one point in the filming, Julianne pecked Kristen on the cheek during a moment when Kristen's character looked particularly sad.

However, just as a five-year-old child might do, she seemed to wipe the kiss off her cheek.

Not seen on set on Friday was Alec, who spent an exhausting day Thursday puckering up to his on-screen wife.

The 55-year-old shot take after take passionately embracing his gorgeous co-star as they sat on the rocks by the sea shore.

Clearly comfortable in each other's company, the professionals enjoyed a laugh and a chat between takes with no visible signs of any awkwardness.

The film is set for release in 2015 though no date has been confirmed at this stage.

Clearing out the cobwebs: The star later took to the beach for a solo stroll, though it looked to be quite the windy excursion, with her hair billowing behind her in the breeze as her clothes clung to her slim figure

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen her smile before...

Can not wait for 2015 and this film. Great actresses Moore and Stewart. Amazing book, too. Actually I would love to see CXR movie with Krist Stewart and Clouds SM this year.

Why is even one person so unhealthily obsessed with what expression someone they don't know has on their face at any one random moment? I say this every time - the smile police are creepy beyond belief!

Um, for the people commenting on the looks....The movie is about a woman who gets Alzheimer's (Julianne) and the stress and difficulty among the family. Basically, obviously not a film where they are supposed to be all dolled up so I'm totally baffled by people going "they look rough." Alzheimer's isn't supposed to be glamorous. Anyway, great book and I'm looking forward to the movie.

Is she in character? Or is she just walking along the beach with Julianne Moore. I can¿t even tell. It looks to be like she is playing herself¿

How many smiles do you have to report before you stop calling it rare, D M?

She's losing her beauty already. It goes fast in the female. Too bad about her eyebrows!
