Chinese satellites picked up signs of a 'suspicious' object measuring 72ft wide by 42ft wide (pictured top left) in an area 75 miles west of where Australia reported an earlier sighting of floating debris. The images were taken at lunchtime on March 18, Chinese state media reported, just two days after the sighting by Australian satellites singled out the area in the southern Indian Ocean (bottom left). The discovery was revealed this morning by Malaysia's acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein (centre) after he was passed a handwritten note during his daily press conference. Meanwhile, the first day of aerial searches by Royal Australian Air Force crews (right) turned up nothing.

Ten shots have been shortlisted for the Velux Lovers of Light photography competition where entrants were asked to take a snap which captures and celebrates daylight. Six of the images were taken from across the UK from places including Cannock in the West Midlands and Bridport, Dorset. The competition sees both amateurs and professionals photograph landscapes waking up and as days draw to a close.

As all big brothers should, Corbin Crawford, 12, was looking out for his younger sibling Dylan, 7, when the pair found themselves in a slippery situation on an Iowa river on Thursday. The pair were walking along the frozen Des Moines River when suddenly the ice began to shift, and they realized it was too dangerous to leave their position. Corbin tightly held his scared little brother as a rescue operation was put into play, first sending life jackets out to the two should they have fallen through the ice. Firefighters then sent out a light aluminum boat that was able to ferry the pair back to shore, where there anxious mother was waiting.
