Russell Crowe made the most of a whirlwind visit to Rio De Janeiro by taking in the picturesque metropolis on wheels.

The Australian star, who is currently on the promotional tour for his latest film Noah, was spotted cycling his way along the city's bustling foreshore on Friday.

A safety helmet strapped tightly to his head, the 49-year-old looked just like any other tourist enjoying a trip to Brazil.

'Bike ride in Rio. 16.5 km of chaos,' the father of two later informed his Twitter followers.

Later the Hollywood star was dressed for comfort as he enjoyed the view from the top of Corcovado Mountain.

Wearing khaki shorts, black trainers, a black singlet - conveniently promoting his latest film and directorial The Water Diviner - and sunglasses, the Hollywood heavyweight looked like any other tourist in the city.

But the biking and hiking adventure was short-lived, with Crowe telling fans he was jetting out of the country less than two days after arriving.

'Excited that I finally got to experience Brazil ... even if was for less than 48 hours,' he tweeted. 'Next stop Brownsville, Texas. #Noah tour rolls on'.

Before Rio the star made a visit to Rome, where he enjoyed the company of a beautiful Italian actress.

The actor was joined by Daniela Virgilio on Tuesday night, as well as Paramount executive Rob Moore, at Antica Pesa restaurant.

Crowe tweeted a selfie of the three of them at the eatery, where they reported stayed ‘until the wee hours eating pasta and Russell was snapping pictures.’

Russell has been single since he and his wife Danielle Spencer separated in 2012, after nine years of marriage.
