Fifty Shades of Grey hunk Jamie Dornan admits he gets in the mood for sex scenes by watching Sex and the City DVD box sets

By Marc Andrews

Fifty Shades of Grey hunk Jamie Dornan has revealed that he watches DVD box sets of the classic steamy TV series Sex and The City to get himself in the mood for raunchy scenes.

Playing the role of sex mad Christian Grey in the movie version of E.L. James' record-breaking novel, Jamie will first be seen in the new Channel 4 series New Worlds alongside Game of Thrones' actor Joe Dempsie who sat through the Sex and the City DVD marathon with Jamie.

'Joe and I watched all the Sex and the City box sets,' he told The Sun newspaper. 'That helped'.

He says the classic raunchy TV series set in New York helped boost his acting confidence when it came to shooting sex scenes, particularly on New Worlds.

Jamie also added that the whole cast of the Channel 4 series got involved in the steamy scenes.

'We had a ball,' he said, 'it was a good craic.'

Jamie pointed out that while sometimes you don't always have good luck when it comes to getting on with the rest of your cast, when everyone is on the same wavelength and everyone approaches the game the same way you can have a great time on set.

'Obviously we're getting the work done but you're allowed to have fun at work,' he told the paper. 'I'd stop if I wasn't allowed to have fun.'

Jamie's current TV project of New Worlds is a historical drama and the last one that he worked on before he moved to his highly-anticipated big screen movie of 50 Shades of Grey.

New Worlds, while perhaps not quite so controversial in subject matter as E. L. James' torrid tales of bondage and kinky sex, has plenty for viewers to find disturbing including scalpings, torture scenes, shootings, stabbings and kidnapppings.

Thankfully the gruesomeness and goriness of the period drama set in the 1680s also has plenty of lighter and more romantic moments, most involving Alice Englert from Beautiful Creatures and Freya Mavor from Sunshine on Leith.

Jamie says that he hopes that people will be able to watch the series and see the parallels between contemporary situations and similar ones that people found themselves in centuries ago.

'Some people just like to watch for the visuals like nice costumes or good music - they don't look beyond that,' he declared.

One thing viewers will no doubt be spending plenty of time looking at will be Jamie's hairstyle in New Worlds which he describes as a really curly bap with an added Eighties rock star thing on the back and the sides for more of a 17th century feel.

While at first the idea was to give Jamie's character a wig to wear on set of New Worlds, after a few minutes of trying to glue the wig on Jamie's own hair without success the decision was made to shave it all off and he ended up virtually bald.

Northern Irish lad Jamie also told the paper that while he may have initially found fame through modelling, most notably the Calvin Klein underwear ads which earned him the nickname of 'The Golden Torso', it was acting that he always wanted to ultimately be involved with.

Jamie declared that after getting his break in modelling and then mucking around trying to be in a band his intention was always to be an actor, something he knew deep down he always wanted to be.

His big break came when he played Swedish count Axel von Fersen in Sofia Coppola's critically-acclaimed movie Marie Antoinette in 2006. After this came star turns in ABC's Once Upon A Time and  the BBC's The Fall.

While New Worlds, which premieres on Channel 4 on April 1 at 9pm, is likely to win Jamie even more fans, it's likely his starring role as racy billionaire Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey will not only win him a legion of fans, but turn him into a household name and make him one of the biggest stars of his generation.

Really? Sex and the City gets him in the mood? I find that somewhat odd that that's his top choice lol

I think any reviewer could go ahead and write their reviews for this movie now - whereas Sex and the City seemed to at least try, this movie fails miserably.

There is nothing remotely sexy about Sex and the City for a straight male to get worked up over.

He was so incredibly boring when he was on the Graham Norton show. But maybe on the big screen he's not that bad...

I actually thought he was pretty funny. He did have a strange tippy-toe walk...

He's not bad to look at, but wouldn't pick him for Christian Grey.
