Liverpool to let Reina go for £4m due to a clause in Spanish keeper's Reds contract

By Dominic King

Pepe Reina can leave Liverpool this summer for as little as £4million due to a clause in his contract.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has made it clear he does not want Reina to return to Anfield once his loan spell with Napoli is over at the end of this season.

Reina will return to Merseyside in the close season to tie up loose ends but Liverpool will not get above €5m for the Spain goalkeeper, who still has two-years left on his current deal at Anfield.

Napoli are interested in making his signing permanent but Atletico Madrid – for whom Reina’s father played – are also monitoring the situation, as they will lose Thibaut Courtois to Chelsea this summer.

Reina had claimed on Monday that Rodgers hadn't closed the door on him returning to Liverpool and told BBC: 'Liverpool got another goalkeeper and they told me they were happy to loan me for a season.

'It was strange but I don’t regret it. There are always ups and downs - the last two-and-a-half years at Liverpool, there were different methods and perhaps I didn’t do as good as I used to under Rafa but I don’t think I was bad.'

Reina penned an open letter to supporters after leaving for Serie A in July. That was published on the official website and appeared to have ended any prospect of a comeback.

Rodgers said last month: ‘He’s already written his (goodbye) letter hasn’t he? I was surprised at the letter when you are a loan player. Pepe made it very clear when he went to Napoli he was looking to move.'

regardless, for 4m Liverpool could just decide to keep him as a better backup than jones and let the contract run two more years.

@Warrenb a "clause" is any paragraph in a contract that conveys rights.

There may be a 4 million pound clause but happens if there is a bidding war?

There wont be a bidding war. All clubs have to do is meet the buyout clause. Pepe can then choose who he wants based on what is on ofa

Again, funny article. Monday, Reina claimed the door was still open for him towards Anfield, and yet nothing from BR nor LFC on this since? And £4m? I don't think so. More like £11m, in today's market.

Wouldnt hurt to have him stay and have 2 decent goalkeepers available, Jones is no good. I find it strange that Liverpool would let him go for 4 million with 2 years left, why do we never get a decent/good price back for players?

reina could be left on the bench.. paying him 100k a week wages at the same time makes no sence
