City go into clash with United at Old Trafford as favourites for first time in Premier League era... what a turn up for the bookies!

By Gavin Beech

Manchester City go into Tuesday’s derby as bookmakers' favourites to win the fixture at Old Trafford for the first time in Premier League history.

Having already thrashed United 4-1 at the Etihad earlier in the season, Coral make Manuel Pellegrini’s side clear 23-20 favourites to pile more misery on United boss David Moyes.

The home side's prospects in this fixture had looked bleak until recent confidence-boosting wins over Olympiacos and West Ham and the players looked in relaxed mood as they headed into Carrington for training on Monday morning.

But the City machine is purring at the moment, so much so that Coral still make them 6-4 favourites to finish top of the pile come May despite the fact that they sit six points behind Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea (albeit with three games in hand).

City didn’t need to be at their best to see off a beleaguered Fulham at the weekend but the form of hat-trick hero Yaya Toure is sure to strike fear into their derby rivals, who are crying out for a player of that quality in their midfield.

One of his potential opponents on Tuesday, Michael Carrick, has insisted the derby does not matter to United as even a victory would not repair the damage of this season.

‘I don’t think it matters,’ said Carrick. ‘It’s just another game for us. A big game but it’s not going to repair any of the damage that’s been done in recent months by us losing games.

‘Beating City would help us in terms of keeping our run going. We understand the fans and the result they want, and for us as players it’s exactly the same, but we’re still not getting carried away because of the season we’ve had.

‘When you’re at this club and things aren’t going well it’s not always a nice place but mentally you have to deal with it. I think we’ve all had a tough time this season.

‘Again, Tuesday is a big game but we can’t go into that game thinking about previous weeks. We have to think we can get a good result, like we did against Olympiacos and West Ham.’

I'm from the Wirral so don't follow with club, but I would prefer United to win as I detest Man C due to them trying to buy the league and their team being full of money grabbers who would play for Torquay United (no disrespect) if they offered them enough money.
