It can be difficult to continue with normal life after the end of a relationship.

But Twilight actress Nikki Reed was seen doing her utmost to continue with her regular regime over the weekend, after announcing her split from American Idol husband Paul McDonald.

The 25-year-old actress was accompanied by her dog as she headed out for a jog in the sunshine on Sunday following the sad news being made public.

Nikki showed off her trim and toned physique in a pair of tiny shorts and a blue vest top over a turquoise sports bra as she pounded the pavements in Los Angeles.

Noticeable absence: Nikki's wedding ring was missing from her left hand

With her hair tied back and wearing sunglasses, Nikki appeared deep in thought at points during the exercise regime.

It was revealed over the weekend that Nikki and 29-year-old Paul had split, with their rep telling
People Magazine: 'They have been living separately for the past six months due to work obligations.

'They remain best friends and look forward to their continued journey together.'

Nikki and Paul wed three years ago, and they share two German Shepherds Enzo and Ira.

Just three weeks ago, Reed shared a romantic Instagram letter to McDonald on their three-year anniversary.

Nikki wrote: 'Here's to many more of those awkward hugs and butterflies. I am endlessly amazed by your spirit, kindness, and talent. Your soul is one of a kind. Love ya babe.'

The Independent Spirit Award winner and the Alabama native might be ending their marriage, but they still plan on making beautiful music together.

The rep continued: 'They will continue to share their love of music, and are still working on their debut album, I'm Not Falling, releasing in 2014.'

Back in 2012, their song All I've Ever Needed, was selected to run during the end credits of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.

'Paul and I have...a very strong connection,' Nikki told The Hollywood Reporter at the time.

Reed's indie sports comedy Intramural with Kate McKinnon comes out April 19, In Your Eyes with Jennifer Grey drops April 20, and Murder of a Cat with Fran Kranz screens April 24.
