Fukushima at Three: Folklore vs. Facts, Institute for Policy Studies, Mar. 7, 2014:
- At 9:15 in — Robert Alvarez, senior Energy Department official on nuclear issues from 1993-99: I think that the jury as to the exact amount that was released in the air and the water but over time the amount of the radioactive materials released to the air was I would say roughly in the ballpark of the Chernobyl accident.
- At 14:00 in — Alvarez: The radioactive gases might have been leaving at a rate of 300% a day, instead of 1% assumed by the designers. [...] A radioactive isotope, a short live isotope called xenon-133, which is very radioactive, was found to 400,000 times normal in the city of Chiba. For 8 days. People were likely to be heavily exposed from just the short-lived isotopes. […] So they were getting a yearly dose in about 10 minutes.

The official websites have not changed; still 10% of Chernobyl for all of Fukushima 3 reactors full meltdown, #3 exploding out it's guts, multiple spent fuel pools drying out and catching on fire, #4 melting out of building..
Yea, right, only 10% to 100% of Chernobyl.. minimization spin meister…
That is kind of like a blind and deaf ant feeling the toenail of an elephant and saying that they "assume they are touching a small rock", because they have felt other small rocks and this feels hard.

From what we have seen over the last three years, any comparisons to Chernobyl are way UNDER-rated. Chernobyl was just one, smaller reactor. This was at least four huge reactors and humongous fuel pools as well. And NOTHING done to mitigate it. And right on the ocean.

At least there are estimates about SFP#4. Maybe wildly wrong estimates, but something. Reactors 1-3 no one can even get near.
Report comment
What estimates?
Report comment
Just checked out your article on the numerous lies and "switcheroos" regarding SFP#4. So I guess I meant that they gave out estimates. I admit that I haven't a clue that they are correct! Apparently, a lot of things don't match up!
What people never seemed to realize is that a HUGE "switcheroo" was done with the Gulf disaster in 2010. They switched out the webcam during Hurricane Bonnie in the middle of that summer. It had been at Macondo Well 252-B, the one where the accident happened. They switched it out to Macondo Well 252-A, which was capped the year before! While the 252-B continued to gush!!
Anyone can check that TWO leases was given for the two respective wells, and the differing latitudes and longitudes marked at the respective corners of the webcams.
So I'm not even slightly surprised at "switcheroos" in play with Daichi SFP#4. I suppose I need to get better educated. Though SPF#4 always looked completely smashed just from the appearance of it! From that alone, I had wondered if they were spinning malignant fairy tales.
That said, how easy is it to perpetuate a fraud on the public, especially when not on site? All too easy! All points well taken.

I read Dr. Goodheart's article on Unit 4. It's brilliant. Check it out. Tepco are carrying out a very obvious charade now in having pretended to begin unloading the spent fuel pool. FOIA docs and earlier info available on what was in the pool show they are simply making up a nice story for the public. Very insightful as to the levels of deception around what Tepco and the Shills are reporting. Its a media fantasy.

Do your job Robert Alvarez!
Study the data, collect your own independent data to verify or disprove the other data coming from TEPCO (which is know to be off by varying factors of 10 often). So many scientists and pro nukes talking about studies and scientific method and this bureaucrat comes out with public statements about his assumptions?
Until proven otherwise, I am assuming this guy is an asshat.
They assumed there would be a method of storage and disposal that would be developed.
They assumed that nuclear power plants could have an accident because of all the safeguards.
They assumed WIPP would be able to hide their dirty secrets long enough for them to slip safely into their graves.

It's good to check on this, because sometimes people step forwards because they finally realize it's disastrous and that their voice might help. Then at least they have the chance to evolve into how bad it really is, and their voice is out there.
Maybe everything you say is true. I'm just saying CHECK. It gets easy to paint everyone with the same brush.
Even Arnie Gundersen. He's EVOLVED. Even his wife Maggie says that he wasn't fully turned around until Fukushima. Let's check on people's background and where they come from. There actually MAY be people out there previously pro-nuke, who make turn-arounds just because it is transparently such an ongoing disaster. And if they are mo longer on the payroll of the nuclear industry, then there is something to work with. If so, then their voice is needed.

'EPA Conducted Pollution Experiments on Children'
"In February of 2013, JunkScience.com reported that the EPA gave USC money in the mid 2000’s to find out whether diesel exhaust could “induce reproducible gene expression” in children. From a USC grant in the EPA extramural research grants database, the original December 14, 2012 document showed diesel exposures to children. What now sits on that database is a strongly edited description of the diesel tests on the children. Part of the the experiment's goal was to examine how particulate matter affects "Asthma in Susceptible Children.""

most pathologist, zogerke, will advise isolation in response to raging plague. The forces that we're up against are far-more proactive in their response to any challenge, than most understand. They've constructed controlled opposition and utilized advanced perception management techniques. The Occupy Wall Street movement was but one example of this control. They flawlessly co-opted a movement that fully understood its enemy. Yet that very movement found itself at the mercy of an array of corrosive efforts and eventually succumbed. None of this should be seen as grounds for resignation. On the contrary, feel free to struggle against the machine. Just know, what's now in motion will lay complete and utter waste upon those who chose mammon over the truth. The survivors (yes…there are survivors) will know what brought about the demise of the first global empire and do what is necessary to avoid entrapment. Appealing to the better half of self-serving entities, will not be found on that list of solutions…

aftershock, not sure i understand the metaphor you are using, probably cause i am being way too literal due to my occupation:
in a plague, until you figure out the mode of transmission of disease- is it airborne, bloodborne, spread by droplets or by direct or indirect contact….how long does the pathogen live on an unsanitized surface, what deactivates it….to isolate you must institute engineering controls, decontamination methods, and personal protective equipment while the pathogens are examined elsewhere in a lab under a duct hood to determine how to beat them back…..and at best offer both treatment and future immunity….
You are naming the problem ( mammon/ oligarchy control with no future humanistic vision but fascism for most and luxury for a few)…saying that occupy couldn't make change (perhaps it was just one opening skirmish of a longer non violent battle)…and then what are you trying to say? forgive my lack of understanding, respectfully asked.
Caveat- i agree with Socrates that there is progress to be made judicially, as well as other means…and we need to LAST and protect ourselves and survive ourselves, through this onslaught…..

ah- not clear myself:
Until you figure out how the disease and plague is spread, isolation WILL NOT STOP IT.

appreciate the thoughtful response, zogerke. I purposely used the "raging" modifier to describe what's happening. I see things as out of control; on all levels. Rather than join the bucket brigade, I'd suggest putting 'practical' distance between oneself and the danger, and letting it all burn down to the ground.
Until such time as TPTB show signs of wanting genuine progress, I'll not be snookered into further interaction with them. It's likely they'll see such non-cooperation as grounds for further exploitation. Truth is, I've never begrudged them for their dream of world domination. Heck. When you look back through the wreckage of human history, you'd have to be insane to see the self-destructive behavior continue, unabated. But as long as the elite continue using chaos as means of empowerment, I shall refrain from becoming party to their twisted aspirations. I'd not look down on anyone who thinks they can make a difference by working within the system. Kudos to them! I've simply run-out of any trust in these people. I don't care if it's through the courts or the streets, I have no confidence it their ability to get things right. Hence, my desire to see it returned to weeds.
I was but one. They are the many. Who stands to lose the most becomes the real issue. I'll leave this world with nothing more than memories of deprivation. Their lot will be far more difficult to let go of…

doubtless you're fully aware, Goodheart, corporate control of the United States government was formally instituted during the Regan administration. That control was ratified by the Supreme Court's decision to recognize corporations as living entities.
Truth is, few 'governments' on the planet act as representative bodies; least of all, the American people's so-called government. Agencies, like the EPA, are maintained to perpetrate the illusion of government autonomy. Even the most sensitive areas of government, such as intelligence gathering, are now 'farmed out' to corporations.
Expecting any (and I do mean any) action on behalf of the people by government, is a fool's dream. We are and have been on our own for close to a century-and-a-half. Such is why we found ourselves where we have. And while most would think that corporations are the culprits in this ongoing deception, it is only until you look into who actually has fiscal control of these same entities, that the full picture remains hidden…

you must study, Angela_R, the strengths of humans to understand their greatest vulnerabilities. It was our ability to use our individual skills in concert with others, that we found ourselves triumphing over adversity; both natural and man made. But as society morphed into more complex 'organisms', individuality followed behind the clamoring masses. Add advanced technologies into the mix and you've the making of a catastrophe. The hierarchy of social control eventually evolved into institutions of power. The pyramid came to reflect our social structure. We failed to actualize (really understand) that the complex social order that evolved to meet the needs of the many, was still being driven by the decisions of the individual. We even accepted the terminology of that control: Chief Executive Officer, Emperor, Commander and Chief, and so on. We never fully understood that the individual in charge could be compelled by self interest, to sign off on efforts (economic/political/social/etc) that might have devastating long-term effects on our world. That children around the world and countless other lifeforms would be so effected was impossible to fathom by any one individual; including the pyramid's latest penthouse occupant. Our perception of the world about us never caught up with the reality of the technology that was served-up to the lone decision maker…

Aftershock, you're correct about "from the Reagan era on." First it was announced that "government is the problem." Then he appointed department heads who believed that all government should be privatized! No federal Education Department, just vouchers for private schools. No Interior Department, just give away federal land for private mining. No Department of Energy except to serve the oil moguls. Etc., etc. By the time Bush-Cheney was done, the "Small Business Administration" was in the hands of the Fortune 500! And K Street lobbyists running the show everywhere.
Then people turn around and say, "You see? Government is the problem." And by then, it's so twisted and ordinary people so disempowered, that they just go, "yes, yes, yes."
Thomas Jefferson would have been highly dismayed! Never what he and those around him envisioned or wanted.
But it looks like no one can just "rescue American government" either. Now it's GLOBAL, and it's government by the banks!
And this may SEEM to be OT, but not really. Like what is the public court of appeals to force the EPA to have NOT raised so-called "safe" radiation levels to lethal? We COULD have, or MIGHT have, responsive government if the populace was at least educated that people's interests have to come first, WHATEVER the government. And that takes massive, broad-based education.
Part of why I always thought that the path to a least TRY was massive public teach-ins. But the populace…

'Nuclear waste road accidents don't faze WIPP'
"August, a drunk driver crashed into a truck in southern New Mexico that was hauling 28 55-gallon drums of nuclear waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Project in Carlsbad, N.M. (HCN, 4/12/99: Nuclear waste dump opens). Less than two weeks later, the driver of another truck carrying waste to WIPP blacked out, hurtling across an interstate median in Idaho. His backup driver was asleep in the cab.
In July, the New Mexico Department of Transportation reported 89 minor violations found in WIPP vehicles, which haul waste from the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. "It's only a matter of time until there's a more serious accident," says Don Hancock of the Southwest Research and Information Center, a WIPP watchdog group based in Albuquerque."
Hancock says it's not enough. He believes that every vehicle carrying radioactive waste should have an escort and an emergency response team.
"Escorts are costly and unnecessary," says Hurtt, "except in special circumstances, like during the Winter Olympics."
This fall, Congress is expected to increase the WIPP budget by $14 million in order to accelerate waste shipments."

Mueller wanted to present his report in which he had calculated that people in 200 to 300 years – by the current radiation – will have genetic damage as the most affected survivors of Hiroshima. These people, in 10 generations, would have to work only for one thing: To obtain the means to take care of their suffering. This is what Mueller wanted to tell, BUT the AEC (Predecessor of the NRC) gave him no talk permission. [cut for brevity]"

FDA Adds Alaska Salmon Testing To Radiation Monitoring Program
April 1, 2014
Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation State Director of Environmental Health Elaine Busse Floyd says samples of Alaska fish have been submitted to a Federal Food and Drug Administration testing program.
“We were able to just encourage the FDA to add 20 samples of Alaskan fish to their annual monitoring program to specifically look and test fish for radionuclides,” she said.
Floyd says each Alaska fish sample, is made up of multiple flesh samples from various species including halibut, pollock, sable fish and salmon, including Copper River and Bristol Bay stocks. The samples were sent to an F.D.A. testing lab in Massachusetts in March, the first time Alaska fish has been submitted for testing.
Floyd says results from Fukushima radiation testing of Alaska fish are expected back from the FDA in late April.

From the documents, NISA instruction to Tepco:
''TEPCO should report to NISA the situation of storing and treatment of the contaminated water
in the Power Station and future forecast based upon the current situation have to be reported to NISA as soon as the treatment facility starts its operation. Also, subsequently, continued report has to be submitted to NISA once a week until the treatment of the accumulated water in the Central Radioactive Waste Treatment Facility is completed.''
This is what Fuku 1 has become, a giant water treatment and storage plant. From this, one assumes Tepco will be reporting to NISA once a week for a very long time because they seem unable to get the water treatment plant to work and so highly radioactive water will continue to accumulate in the Central Waste Treatment facility. They will need more tanks. They are likely to run out of land and will have to buy more land to build more tanks on.
Even if they ever get the water treatment plant to work, they will have to keep it running forever because the plant will produce hundreds of tons of highly contaminated water every day forever, and they will need to partly clean that water to be able to release it into the pacific ocean instead of building more and more tanks to store it, forever.

Genpets seems to create a reaction wherever they go. While in the store window of Iodine Toronto, the shop owner began sleeping in the store as many nights, people would bang at the windows furiously. Some in protest of the small Bio-genetically engineered creatures trapped in plastic, some wanting to wake them up or buy them. Hordes of teens wanting a bioengineered pet met confused, baffled, or even shocked looks from parents.
For an upcoming generation, through our own marketing techniques, life and the idea of life are quickly becoming viewed as disposable commodities.

Tanaka, a distinguished fellow of Columbia's Center for Global Energy Policy, explained that the nuclear accident in Fukushima was completely avoidable and attributed the root cause to human error.
''Important lessons have been learned, though. The Japanese have conducted a thorough safety review of their nuclear plants and are working closely with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to help ensure world-class safety standards…

The Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) and pyroprocessing represent revolutionary improvements in new nuclear generation.
''Tanaka noted that the IFR provides an inexhaustible supply of energy, contains inherent passive safety mechanisms, and offers a long-term waste management system. Compared to lead from batteries, which does not decay, or toxic emissions dumped into the biosphere, nuclear waste management is one the safest and most sensible approaches Tanaka argued.

Under the headline 'Lessons of Fukushima: Reactor Restarts are Unwise' an opinion piece in the Japan Times by Jeff Kingston today ends with this paragraph:
''(Kyle) Cleveland concludes that Japan’s nuclear reactors should not be restarted. As one American nuclear expert told him, “Without a qualitatively different regulatory system, and in light of how Japan/Tepco responded to this crisis, Japan has not earned the right to have nuclear energy. No critically minded and informed person can evaluate this disaster and look at how Japan has responded in the aftermath and have any confidence that Japan will use nuclear energy safely. And in the most seismically active country in the world, even if Japan had a robust regulatory structure and thoroughly integrated crisis protocols, nature conspires against the best-laid-plans of human institutions. And what Japan has is certainly not the best plan by any measure.”
