Her 'buddy': Kendall Jenner shares photo with Jaden Smith after he lands major role in slavery drama The Good Lord Bird

By Andy Tillett

Kylie Jenner calls him her 'best guy friend' and it looks like he's won over her sister too, as Kendall Jenner posted a picture of her laughing with Jaden Smith.

In the picture poster Friday the son of actor Will Smith appeared to be giving the reality TV star a low five, slapping his hand against her open palms. The 18-year-old captioned the picture 'buddy.'

They may have been celebrating the news that he landed his most challenging role to date, the lead part in The Good Lord Bird, according to Deadline.

The 15-year-old rising star will portray Henry 'Onion' Shackleford in a big-screen adaptation of the 2013 novel by James McBride.

The movie will be told through Jaden's character's eyes as he meets radical slavery abolitionist John Brown, to be played by Liev Schreiber, in 1856 Kansas and follows him on his crusade.

At their first meeting, Brown mistakes Shackleford for a girl as he is wearing a dress, which he continues to do for most of the plot of the novel.

Brown – based on a real historical figure - famously didn't believe in the notion of peaceful resistance and advocated fighting the system of slavery through violence, feeling harm done to slave owners was God's punishment.

Along their journey, Shackleford and Brown meet other leading lights of social reform including Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman.

The story also sees them take part in the Raid on Harpers Ferry, an armed slave revolt in 1859 organised by Brown where his gang seized a United States arsenal in Virginia.

The Good Lord Bird won the US 2013 National Book Award for Fiction and has been compared to Mark Twain’s classic novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

After winning his latest role, Jaden was in good spirits as he ate at Sugarfish Sushi in Calabasas on Wednesday, accompanied by his sister, Willow, 13, and their friend Hannah Montana actor Moises Arias.

After their meal Jaden gave a fan with a piece of his own artwork, then they all posed happily for pictures.

Jaden started his acting career in 2003 in TV series All of Us and quickly moved into movies, appearing with The Pursuit of Happyness with his famous father in 2006 before breaking out on his own in The Day the Earth Stood Still in 2008.

He got his first lead role as Dre Parker in 2010's The Karate Kid, a huge box office success, and has been announced to star in a sequel.

However, Jaden's career hasn't all been plain sailing, as his second collaboration with Will, After Earth - in which they play a father and son battling aliens - was panned by critics and earned them Golden Raspberry awards, known as Razzies, as Worst Actors.

Despite not being a critical favourite, the movie still took $230 million at the box office, almost double its budget.

Oh dear.. But he can't act? Just ask anyone who's seen After Earth! His acting is truly appalling and not appropriate for a topic as sensitive as slavery

Can't imagine how the son of Will Smith "lands" starring roles in major films...

Too bad this kid is in the movie. Reason alone not to see it.

Awesome. Another movie about slavery. I just cannot wait for it especially since Jaden Smith is in it. I can never get enough of movies about slavery.

I love the way he hangs with his little sister! My sisters hated taking me out anywhere!

His acting skills are dreadful. If he didn't have his father's name he wouldn't even make it to a B-list, straight-to-DVD movie. Him and his awful sister, bolstered by all the media attention, think they have more talent than they really have.
