Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Pigeons (like certain little boys and girls who will here remain nameless) don't like to take baths, but as time passes and grime builds, the cries become intense for our fine-feathered friends and little ones to take the big dive. In this LOL picture book, master storyteller and illustrator Mo Willems (Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!) provides everything except the soap.

Kirkus Reviews
2014-03-17
The pigeon is back, and he is filthy! Readers haven't seen the pigeon for a couple of years, not since The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? (2012), and apparently he hasn't bathed in all that time. Per the usual routine, the bus driver (clad in shower cap and bathrobe) opens the story by asking readers to help convince the pigeon to take a bath. Though he's covered in grime, the obstreperous bird predictably resists. He glares at readers and suggests that maybe they need baths. With the turn of the page, Willems anticipates readers' energetic denials: The pigeon demands, "YEAH! When was the last time YOU had a bath?!" Another beat allows children to supply the answer. "Oh." A trio of flies that find him repulsive ("P.U.!") convinces him it's time. One spread with 29 separate panels depicts the pigeon adjusting the bath ("Too wet!…Too cold.…Too reflective") before the page turn reveals him jumping in with a spread-filling "SPLASH!" Readers accustomed to the pigeon formula will note that here the story breaks from its normal rhythms; instead of throwing a tantrum, the pigeon discovers what readers already know: "This is FUN!" All the elements are in place, including page backgrounds that modulate from dirty browns to fresh, clean colors and endpapers that bookend the story (including a very funny turnabout for the duckling, here a rubber bath toy). Willems' formula is still a winner. (Picture book. 3-6)

What the hell is this guy talking about. Pigeons can't take baths; they are cold blooded hermaphrodites.

The Pigeon Books are a favorite in this house with a 6 & 4 y

The Pigeon Books are a favorite in this house with a 6 & 4 year old. We even hosted a "Hot Dog Party" in Kindergarten honoring his biggest obsession. My kids did enjoy this latest edition...just not as much as the previous ones. Of course it would be difficult to top "The Duckling Gets A Cookie"...legendary around these parts. Might have overdone it a bit with the famous "panel pages" where the pigeon begs and pleads for whatever he wants. These are usually 7-8 panels of awesomeness, but this time they did 16 small panels on 2 pages which makes it difficult to read to a large group. Overall, a great addition to the Pigeon saga, but not as funny as some of the others. Mo...please dont let them "Pete the Cat" you where you must churn out a book before it's ready. You're awesome...and awesomeness takes time. We'll wait patiently!! (Unlike the pigeon)

Splish Splash Time It seems that Pigeon has had a fun day, but

    Splish Splash Time

It seems that Pigeon has had a fun day, but as a result, he's pretty dirty.  He needs a bath, but he doesn't want to take one, so he's going to offer every excuse in the book to try to get out of it.  What will it take to finally get him in the bath?

Mo's books are usually delightful, and this is no exception.  The excuses Pigeon uses to try to get out of a bath are the same ones you'd hear from any child, of course, things might be ramped up a bit for the comedy.  How he manages to do that with mostly Pigeon talking to us and his illustrations is amazing to me.  And the ending?  Let's just say the next book might be Pigeon Needs to Dry Off.

Whether you have kids who don't want to take their baths or not, you'll find this book to be very fun.  If you can't come up with a good excuse to buy it, stand in a library or bookstore and read it.  You'll be very glad you did.

Purchased two books on new release date for gifts to two female

Purchased two books on new release date for gifts to two female work associates with sons ages 4 prekindergarten and 5 kindergarten.  The next day both parents reported their sons thoroughly enjoyed The Pigeon Needs a Bath book and actually laughed out loud at different parts in the story.  One parent enjoyed the two pages with small panels followed with shout-out on following pages.  Author Mo Williams is commended capturing a young fan base enjoying the Pigeon series.  This week the kindergarten brought home the Scholastic reading order form and excitedly pointed out to parent the Pigeon Needs a Bath book.   Thanks to Barnes & Noble for advertising the new release date and bringing the latest Pigeon adventure into the hearts of two boys sharing the same favorite author, Mo Williams.
