'It's always nerve wracking, but remember': Elizabeth Hurley urges women to get screened for breast cancer during mammogram selfie

She's been the face of Estee Lauder's breast cancer campaign for nearly 20 years.

So when it came to Elizabeth Hurley's latest mammogram, she decided to share the experience with her Twitter followers.

In a bid to raise awareness, the 48-year-old model admitted that while she finds the procedure 'nerve-wracking', she stressed the importance of regular breast screenings.

Having arrived in New York for a charity gala on Monday, Elizabeth prepared for the event by having her breasts checked at the Evelyn H Lauder Breast Center.

Wearing what appeared to be a striped dressing gown and make-up, Liz posed for a selfie with medical equipment in the background.

Posting the photo on Instagram, she tweeted: 'After 40 you should have an annual mammogram. Had mine this morning. It's always nerve wracking but remember...

'Breast cancer is 95 per cent curable if detected early @BCRFcure @BCAcampaign @EsteeLauder.'

She went on to elaborate about the charity gala, tweeting: 'In NY to fund raise for breast cancer charity @BCRFcure with @BCAcampaign. Big gala tonight with the fabulous Elton John.'

Breast cancer is a cause close to Elizabeth's heart after she lost her beloved grandmother to the disease in 1992.

In a past interview, Elizabeth said: 'She was 75 when she found a [breast] lump, and she was too scared to tell anyone about it.

'I think she was hoping it would go away if she ignored it. At that time [in 1987], breast cancer was a dirty word that was only whispered.

'Today, we shout about breast cancer from the rooftops.'

Good on ya, Liz. Anything that encourages others to attend their free NHS appointments is brilliant.

Apart from the fact that for most women annual mammograms from the age of 40 are not free......

My mammograms haven't been pain-free, but bearable, especially when you consider the possible outcome.

Astonishing, even during a mammogram, publicity must come first!

Puleeze, there is nothing nerve racking or painful about a mammogram. It's something to put on your to-do list between grocery shopping and the dry cleaning pickup. I've had at least 20. Lordy but ya'll have become a bunch of weenies!

good on her, I have had breast cancer twice, no palpable lumps at all, only discovered by mammograms...... don't think you have to feel a lump - you don't.

How completely absurd. Rather sad you should put something out there like that as a fact. What's your qualification? Clown?

Good on you Liz. Shame some of the other empty headed celebs weren't more like you. They think only of themselves.
