  1. How to place an obituary notice
    • Paid obituary notices may be placed over the phone, via email, fax, or by regular mail.

  3. Required information:
    1. A phone number, name and address of the person responsible for payment.*
    2. The name and phone number of the mortuary or cremation provider handling arrangements. This information is kept confidential and is for our records only. We cannot publish an obituary without this information.
    3. Please state when the notice should appear (day and date).
    • Obituaries will be published in all editions of the newspaper and online at www.startribune.com/obituaries with a complimentary permanent guestbook.
    • All obituaries are eligible to appear online one day prior to print publication.
    • *We will take your payment information over the phone after we have received your approval to publish at the cost quoted.
  4. Information on rates
    • The cost of a paid funeral notice is $10.95 per line for one day in all editions. To publish the same notice for additional days the discounted rate is $6.60 per line per day.
    • Approximately 30-35 characters fit per line
  5. Suggested format/basic information for an obituary
    1. Full name (bold print = 2 or 4 lines of space)
    2. Age
    3. City
    4. Date of death
    5. Preceded in death by
    6. Survived by
    7. Visitation information (day, time, location)
    8. Service information (day, time, location)
    9. Interment
    10. Memorial preferences (if any)
    11. City of the deceased (to be included in the alphabetical index)
  6. Adding a photo or graphic
    • Multiple photos and graphics are available and increase line count. For samples, please see
      "A Guide to Star Tribune Obituaries" (PDF).
    • Email photos to: paidobits@startribune.com. Photos should be in high quality .JPG or .TIF format (minimum 200 dpi), preferably cropped in a square shape.
    • A courier is available in the immediate metro area for photo pick-up Monday-Friday. Please call us at 612-673-4130 before 4 pm weekdays to arrange pick-up. Photos may be dropped off at 425 Portland Ave S before 5 pm weekdays.
  7. Hours of operation
    • Mon-Thurs, 9 am – 7 pm
    • Friday 9 am – 6 pm
    • Sat/Sun/Holidays 9 am – 2 pm
    • Deadline is the day prior to publication.
