Who Or What Is A Jew?

Jews, it seems, are a puzzle not only to Gentiles but even to themselves. You would think – wouldn’t you – that, having been around for such a long time, they ought to have a clear idea of who and what they are and where they come from.

Throw together some Jews and let them debate the question Who is a Jew? and you will certainly have a lively – make that a heated! - discussion.

This debate has become a very hot issue for the state of Israel as the answer has implications for anyone who wishes to move there under the Law of Return. This law not only grants a Jew the right to immigrate but automatically confers citizenship immediately upon arrival.

Is a Jew someone who adheres to and is defined by the religion known as Judaism, be its flavour Reconstructionist, Liberal, Conservative, Orthodox, Ultra-Orthodox or even Karaite? Or is he a member of a clearly definable racial/ethnic group, i.e.a descendant of the ancient Judeans? Or perhaps Judaism is something so unique that it transcends any man-made definitions and becomes an ineffable mysterium of cosmic proportions?

And where exactly do converts fit in?

Hilaire Belloc, Anglo-French writer and historian, suggested something less awe-inspiring than a “cosmic mystery” by comparing Jews to chameleons: “… adjusted their notions of themselves to suit the varying circumstances with which they were confronted. They were a race when it suited them, a nationality when necessity demanded it, a religious group, and, finally, a cultural unit when the situation made such a status desirable.

There is no shortage of definitions and descriptions, from the down-to-Earth to the mystical to the ludicrous, but none that would satisfy everybody. The only answer Jews will be able to agree upon is this: “We are not non-Jews!” Facetious as this may sound it pretty much hits the nail on the head!

The truth is: most Jews, exactly like their Gentile neighbours, are really nothing more than sheeple,   ignorant and too lazy to educate themselves and do their own thinking. Having outsourced their thinking to the rabbis, self-appointed makers and interpreters of Jewish law, they are easy to dupe and manipulate. Religious and secular leaders cannot afford to allow the rank and file member of the tribe to reflect too deeply on certain matters for fear he might discover some disturbing facts that could shatter the grandiose self-image that has been so skillfully crafted and carefully cultivated over millenia.

In a rather nebulous sort of way most Jews, believers and non-believers alike, consider themselves, members of a “special” people, i.e. a group with a unique religion, a unique mission for mankind, a history of unique suffering and – above all – a unique genome that goes back thousands of years to Abraham, the alleged founding father of the tribe.

The picture they have of themselves is a delusion. The quote below illustrates how woefully inadequate their capacity for self-reflection, how ill-informed and superficial they are:

“Many Jews may not know much about Judaism, but we do know that we are somehow different because we are Jews — whatever that means. And we know that other Jews are somehow connected to us.”

Jewish author Gary Tobin, 1999

(emphasis mine BJW)

These ill-defined mystical notions (I call them wishy-washy!) are the source of their sense of self: something without a solid foundation – a castle in the clouds!

One more thing, Mr Tobin! Make that “Most Jews“! Not just “Many Jews“! The average convert to Judaism, having been compelled – as a pre-requisite for acceptance – to study the Jewish religion, history and the Hebrew language, oftentimes for a year or even more, is more informed on these matters than he who thinks that in order to be a proud Jew it is enough to be born Jewish, to eat “gefilte fish” and not be a Christian.

 “Somehow different ...” – “Whatever that means ...” – “Somehow connected …

Even atheist Zionists are firmly convinced that “somehow” their people, “whatever that means” is morally and intellectually superior to the Gentiles and it is equally obvious to them that the very same God they do not believe in promised them the Land of Israel to which they are “somehow connected“.

To Zionists who worship the Jewish “people” and revere the state of Israel as its embodiment, the concept of a “blood line” leading back to the ancient Israelites is of paramount importance. The revelation that Jews are not the descendants of the Israelites is anathema and must be resisted at all costs as it undermines claims that Jews are the rightful heirs of the Israelites and thus the rightful owners of Palestine.

There was a time, not too long ago, when you were considered an anti-Semite if you referred to Jews as a race. Now, however, Jews – ever the chameleons described by Belloc – are ready to call you an anti-Semite if you deny that they are a race, or at least a “people” with a shared genome.

It is easier to put the head in the sand than it is to think for yourself. It is psychologically more comforting to cling to the myth of being something special, the “Chosen People”, singled out by none other than God Himself and set apart from the “hoi polloi”, i.e. the rest of mankind.

Let’s have a look at this preposterous claim of descent from the ancient Israelites/Judeans.

The Bible itself informs us in the book of Exodus that the Israelites left Egypt accompanied by a “mixed multitude” without telling us who they were and how many, although the choice of words would seem to indicate a not insignificant number.

Some identify the Israelites with the Habiru, nomads that roamed in the area of the Fertile Crescent from Egypt in the West to Iran in the East. In this writer’s view, more likely than not, the “Israelites” were not even Israelites at that time but Egyptians, the adherents of the monotheistic religion Atenism, who were forced to flee for their lives after the death of the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten, the founder of their religion.

Be that as it may! After the invasion of Canaan – more likely than not this was a very slow process of encroaching rather than a blitzkrieg-type of conquest – the Israelites, from the most humble peasant all the way up to royalty, mixed with their neighbours, informally through intermarriage and formally through conversion.

King David’s mother was a Moabite as was his great-grandmother, Ruth, a convert. King Solomon’s mother was a Hittite and he was said to have hundreds, if not thousands of wives, women of diverse lineage, e.g. Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, and Hittite.

In doing so they were only following the example set by their ancestors: Abraham himself cohabited with Hagar, an Egyptian;  Joseph married Asenath, an Egyptian and Moses married Zipporah, a Midianite and so on and so forth…….

Intermarriage has always been the cardinal offense a Jew can commit against his family and against the Jewish community. It is the religious equivalent of the political crime of high treason!

“I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab; and half  of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak their own           language. And I contended with them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair…

Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”

Nehemiah 13:23-27

The influx into the fold through intermarriage has nevertheless continued unabated throughout the centuries and millenia, despite Talmudic injunctions. A survey in 1990 of the American Jewish community revealed that 52% of all marriages by Jews in America were to non-Jews. Jewish scare mongers even compare this high rate of intermarriage found in the Western world to a “holocaust” (what a versatile and useful tool the word “holocaust” is!).

One study done in the USA found that 80% of the parents of non-Jewish spouses of Jews had positive attitudes about Jewish people, but only a quarter of the Jewish parents of a child married to a non-Jew had positive attitudes towards Gentiles. Can you spot the bigots??

Modern Judaism is certainly not a missionary religion – in fact it is reluctant to accept converts for any reason. But this was not always so. There were periods in history when Jews were actively proselytizing and welcoming converts into their midst. They were willing ‘to compass sea and land to make one proselyte’.

 Jews from Asia

The Book of Esther, on which Purim is based, relates that many Persians converted when they realized the immense power the Jews wielded through Mordechai and Queen Esther,.

After the Romans conquered and destroyed Carthage many Carthaginians and Phoenicians (both groups of Semitic stock) became Jews. Iberia, today’s Spain, had been a colony of Carthage. The conversion by Carthaginians is the most likely origin of the large Jewish communities of Spain and North Africa.

The Hasmoneans converted the Idumeans of southern Judea and the Itureans of Galilee, albeit forcibly.

During the 1st century AD there emerged in what is now Kurdistan the Jewish kingdom of Adiabene.

Jewish historian Flavius Josephus is not the only one who testifies to the missionary zeal of the Jews. The Romans were concerned about it, as is evident from the writings of Horace, Seneca, Juvenal and Tacitus et al. Trying to stem the tide Emperor Hadrian even issued an edict to forbid circumcision of proselytes.

During the 5th century AD, a Jewish kingdom arose in present-day Yemen, whose descendants retained their Jewishness throughout the Islamic period to this very day. Most of them settled in Israel in the 1950s.

Arab chroniclers report the existence of Judaised Berber tribes. Jewish Berbers took part in the Moslem conquest of Spain thereby strenghtening the Jewish communities that had already been there since the days of Carthage.

The most spectacular mass conversion, however, occurred in the 8th century AD in the kingdom of Khazaria. It is the descendants of the Khazars that constitute the overwhelming majority of Jews, the so-called Ashkenazim.

What do these episodes of intermarriage and mass conversion tell us about the homogenous character of Jewry? Anyone who still believes the Jews are a race ought to pay a visit to Israel and look at the people!

 Lemba Jews

If you do visit you will find that Jews come in all shapes and sizes. This writer has himself lived in an immigration center in Israel (Kiryat Gad to be precise) and has first-hand knowledge of the religious-cultural and racial-ethnic diversity of the Jewish people. There were Jews from the UK and Chile, from Hungary and Italy, from Romania and Australia, from Argentina and the USSR. There were dark-skinned Jews from India (the ladies even wore saris!) and Falashim, Jews of Ethiopia, as black-skinned as any non-Jewish Ethiopian. They all had more in common with the people amongst whom they lived before coming to Israel than they had with one another. And while I have not yet met a Native American Jew, an Eskimo Jew or a Chinese Jew I do know that there are some. Let’s not forget the Lemba tribe in Southern Africa who also claim to be Jews.

After millenia of interacting with Gentile nations in myriad ways, despite enforced or self-imposed segregation, there is no people as mixed as the Jews. Jewry is a patchwork of races and no Jew can therefore convincingly claim to hail back to ancient Judea, let alone Abraham, but such a trivial matter does not shake the arrogance of the Jew. I have never come across anyone born Jewish who would openly acknowledge the certainty or even just the possibility that he himself is descended from a long line of converts. No, perish the thought! They are of the seed of Abraham! This boastful assumption of “racial purity” is beautifully put into words by Jewish novelist J Krantz in her autobiography:

“We were born of Jewish parents who were born of Jewish parents going back,  I assume,  for thousands of years, barring the occasional pogrom and rape. My                     ancestors were Jews as far back as you can possibly imagine. That alone is  more than enough to make us Jews.”

Krantz, J., 2000, p. 325

So, tell me, Ms Krantz: “You assume that your ancestry goes back thousands of years? Guess what, so does mine and actually everybody else’s too! Of course, what you want to imply here is that your bloodline goes back – untainted by outsiders  - all the way to the ancient Israelites and to Abraham. How do you know that? Your Khazar genes we can take as a given, I think. But how do you know that there isn’t a host of other ethnicities besides, say an Egyptian or two, a few Phoenicians, Ethiopians, Berbers, Romans or Greeks or God knows who else?” Give me a break!

Christians and Moslems will generally make a convert feel welcome. They will open their hearts and their homes. Jews on the other hand tend to be suspicious, stand-offish and unwelcoming to the point of rudeness or even open hostility.

Jews are willfully blind to the fact that their people is not now – and never was – the “genetic monolith” they believe it to be. Unwilling to look too closely at their own mongrelized origins, they are nevertheless ready to disparage converts at the drop of a hat. A convert may be a Jew on paper, he may join a congregation and move to Israel – but in the eyes of a “real” Jew he actually remains a goy.

“The most insidious and persuasive barrier to a convert’s full integration into the Jewish   community derives from the passionate and often heated who-is-a-Jew debate. Underlying  many of the arguments swirling around in this discussion is the (secret) conviction that true membership in the Jewish community can only be achieved by birth. All other comers can never be like us, not really, not in their hearts. But we cannot say this out loud.

Jewish author Gary Tobin, 1999

(emphasis mine BJW)

 In Conclusion:

Historian Arnold J. Toynbee maintains that Judaism as we know it was created in Babylon. He writes, “Judaism is a development of the Pre-Exilic religion of Judah that was created in and by the Babylonian diaspora and was imposed by it on the Jewish population in Judaea. … There has also been the aim of converting the gentile world to the worship of Yahweh under the aegis of a world-empire centred on Eretz Israel and ruled by ‘the Lord’s Anointed’: a coming human king of Davidic lineage.” (Reconsiderations, p. 486).

And just as Judaism is a concoction of religious ideas and practices borrowed from a variety of sources, such as Sumer and Canaan, from Atenist Egypt and above all Zoroastrian Persia, the Jewish “people” itself is nothing more than a Persian artifact, a tool created for the express purpose of world conquest!

I suggest that Jewry be labelled as follows:

Designed and Manufactured in Babylon

Ingredients: sourced from diverse races and nations

Mostly Khazars  but may contain traces of Egyptians, Habiru, Berber, Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks and others

Keep out of reach of goyim

 Caution:

Avoid contact if allergic to racism, arrogance and mendacity
