was unanimously voted to become our new treasurer after
Brian G4DXB resigned.

This evening I was contacted by Carl G4SRF with the sad news that Fred G2HOJ passed away yesterday
aged 102 years.
I know lots of club members will remember Fred as one of the pioneering amateurs and have fond memories
of him.
Many will recall his exploits in amateur radio, he operated well into his 80s I for one miss hearing him on the
bands

The Grimsby Amateur Radio Society with a donation for the RNLI of £150.00 raised during the SOS week held in January by radio hams all over the UK. Presenting the cash is Mrs Frances Hall secretary of The New Sunnyside Club, Cleethorpes where the group have a permanent radio shack, other members are Tom G4ZRV, Tony GL0AC, Pete G6NDH, Frances and Steve Burton coxswain of the Cleethorpes Inshore Life Boat Andy G0MNI, Bri M6LZX and Chris G7BRZ.

Hi All,
The results of the 70 cm Affiliated Society Contest have just been published. We managed to be placed 14th out of 44 at our first attempt at this event.
In the Superleague (the results of the 6 events for Affiliated Societies) we are in an amazing FIFTH place out of 78 UK Radio Clubs, with the results of the 80m SSB and CW events still to come.
This was the first time we have entered the 6m, 2m, and 70cm events, although of course we normally do well in the 160m and 80m events. We might well finish even higher, as two of the Clubs presently above us have no track record on 80m.
Congrats and thanks to all those who made a big effort to erect antennas and appear on the VHF/UHF Bands.

The first event of the year came on a very cold Saturday on the 4th of January GB4BMF (brass monkey flying) at the air field at North Coates as this was the first of the North Coates flying clubs events. We arrived at about 9.45 and parked in the car park after having a look at a very wet outfield where we normally go to operate it was decided to stay in the car park as a change to the normal every thing including the kitchen sink we operated for the two cars Bri M6LZX, Chris G7BRZ, and Dave M0KWK on the hf radio an FT 857 and a Atlas 120 antenna had a few contacts on 40 mtrs some 14 in total working UK and Europe on very poor band conditions Tom G4ZRV Tony G1OAC and Peter G6NDH worked locals on 2 mtrs the event had a few brave pilots landing having a coffee and some old tractors added to the display ..

The sos week went well we operated on the 26th, 26th and 29th of Jan and the 1st & 2nd of Feb, from the New Sunnyside Club in Cleethorpes about 500 yards from the life boat station. Across the 5 days we had some 416 40 mtr ssb contacts 38 vhf fm and dstar and some 300 contacts on data psk31 even with one day wasted with a continental contest 40mtrs ft 950 and a trapped dipole at 7 meters psk data ft 840 into home brew cobweb at 12 mtrs high ,2mtrs fm ft 847 and tri band collinear at 13mtrs on sunday the 2nd we were joined by George g4ebk to have a go at the 70cm afs contest with 7 contacts for good points for the club. In the New Sunnyside club they have an change bottle for donations to the RNLI and the committee have donated the contents of £150.00 to the sos week in the club and gars name .

Dave M0KWK told the meeting that the RNLI SOS week went very well plus George G4EBK had come down on the Sunday morning to do the 70cm contest, Dave also said and that the Sunnyside club would be donating the contents of the large bottle on the bar full of coins to the RNLI the amount totalled £150. Bri M6LZX was to contact Steve Burton at the Cleethorpes life boat house to arrange a time and date for the members of the special events team to go down for a photo shoot at the presentation of the cheque hopefully with the aim of a couple of photo’s for the RADCOM and the local papers.
George told the meeting that the contests were doing well and the Gars Contest team were getting reasonably high scores

The 2014 Club Championship events run from February to July and then the Club Sprints from August to November. Hopefully GARS will remain at the upper end of the Results Tables.
The Results of the Top-Band Club Calls Contest are expected before Xmas, no doubt GARS and its members will figure prominently.

Rowley Walker G3IYT
TRIBUTES have been paid to the oldest qualified electrician still working in England.
Rowley Walker was still signing certificates for Walkers Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Limited the week before he died – at the age of 91.
Born in October 1922, he had three sisters and a brother and was educated at Reynolds Street and Bursar school, in Cleethorpes, and Harold Street school, Grimsby.
He left school at the age of 14 and became an apprentice electrician to his father.
He was featured by Yorkshire Television as the oldest qualified electrician still working in England, prompting an inspection from regulators who couldn't believe that he could still be competent.
Daughter Nadine Waldron told the 130-strong congregation at his funeral at Grimsby Crematorium: "Rowley sent the first inspector away with a flea in his ear for being condescending.
"He offered to have another inspection, which, of course, he duly passed."
Rowley spent many happy years working as the electrical contractor at the Beacholme Holiday Camp in Humberston, where staff hosted a celebration of his life following the service, with a buffet.
Nadine said: "One of the stories I have gleaned about his childhood is that he had an old, large tea chest in the back yard and would regularly go and sit in it and watch the rain come down.
"That was probably good training for sailing and fishing in the rain in years to come."
He was also a tearaway in his teens and 20s, going scrambling on his motorbike and being somewhat fast, shall we say, in the driving of cars and motorbikes."
During the war, Rowley served in the RAF in France, where he met his wife Gisele. They married in Arras, France, in the mid-1940s and he persuaded her to come to England. They had three children, Nadine, Mark and Nicole.
Sadly, Gisele died in 1970 when Mark and Nicole were still young, and he looked after them with help from his sisters.
In the mid-1970s, he met Audrey. They married in 1975 and enjoyed a long and supportive marriage until his death at Hull Royal Infirmary, where he had been transferred to from Grimsby.
Through the marriage he gained two stepchildren.
Rowley was also a keen ice hockey player.
Nadine said: "On the ice he was fast and full of menace – frequently fighting and earning the nickname of the Sin Bin King.
"When that skating rink closed in the 1950s, he took to sailing.
"He was a member of the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht Club and a founder member of the Humber Mouth Yacht Club.
"Rowley continued with his sailing exploits for many years, including climbing the mast of the Sail Training Schooner, The Malcolm Miller, when he was 60."
He was also an amateur radio enthusiast. He knew Morse code, and even spent his time in hospital interpreting the alarm signals from the medical equipment.
Nadine said: "Right up to the end, his mind was still very active."
As well as his wife, children and stepchildren, Rowley, who lived in Humberston, is survived by grandchildren Lucy, Gisele, James and Ben, and great-grandchildren Ella and Jake.
He also leaves stepgrandchildren and a sister.

Just a quick update on the repeaters GB3GY and GB3GG.
Over the last two weeks I have fine tuned the audio levels on GY both received audio and last Friday the Echolink signal which required an additional audio amplifier between the P.C. and the input to the logic. Please let me have any comments on these changes, good or bad.
I have also monitored the output from GG after some problem with the relayed video this seems to be ok at the moment, but as we are to loose the 13cms allocation for the output I am progressing with an application for a digital TV output on 23cms.
The change to a Digital output and a band change to 23cms should give a much improved coverage and make equipment for reception very cheap.
We will be maintaining the 23cms and 10Ghz analogue input.
The British Amateur Television Club is supporting us with this change and I intend to raise the costs involved with no direct implications to club funds.

Its with great sadness that I inform you that Rowley became a silent key earlier this afternoon.
He went in hospital for a check up last week, they found several things amiss but were unfortunately unable to remedy them.
He celebrated his 91 birthday on 5th October 2013
He will be sadly missed by many radio ops and other friends.

On the 24th of this month the club rules will be discussed by the committee, if you have any comments could you please pass them to a committee member, copies of previous rules can be downloaded on this site, after discussion, the amended rules will be voted on at our main monthly meeting on the 7th Nov.

The 40s weekend was a real success, we had a new computer for data that had some teething problems with an not quite sorted out yet but we know what the problem is now, contacts vhf 9 ssb 37 psk31 21 and to our surprise on Sunday George G4EBK arrived with key in hand and spent some 2 hrs and 33 contacts didn't seem to be the amount of people around as the years pervious yearsbut a good weekend was had by all in the shack, the page for GB4CFF has also been updated.
I have been updating the web pages over the last few days, I have changed the link over on the Local Hams link to my new pages, these are many more pages to include and these should be done over the next few days, hopefully.
The web pages as you know are being hosted by Minotaur IT, and in the last few days they have registered our domain name gars.org.uk and I have received notification from Nominet which is the internet registry for all .uk domain names.

I'm starting updating the local ham pages so you may when looking at the existing pages have a few links missing; this is because of having to move images around. Today I have uploaded another of Barry's cartoons, and will in future change them every weekend.
Also a reminder that the club meetings are held every Thursday evening at the Cromwell Social club in Grimsby, with the first meeting of each month being the official meeting. Shortly it will be the club's AGM which this year will fall on the 3rd October, please try and leave that date free.
As most of you aware the hosting of the site has been moved away from 1and1, and at the moment the domain name gars.org.uk is still hosted by 1and1 but is in the process of being moved, once moved emails in the form of g9xyz@gars.org.uk will be available to any club members

Rik who has looked after the GARS website has had to call it a day as he has found full time employment, we wish Rik success. At last month’s club meeting it was decided that I should look after the web site.
After trying my Serif WebPlus X6 programme I have decided to use Microsoft's Expression Web 4 which is like an updated FrontPage but much improved, which also means I will continue with Rik's pages but make mods etc where and when required.
