Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow enjoy dinner date in Los Angeles after he hints marriage split was caused by his 'issues'

By Claudette Davies

Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow announced their split in March but are still happily living together in their recently acquired $14 million Malibu beach house.

And the couple enjoyed a dinner date on Saturday at West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont, before driving away together in their Audi sports car.

Although they turned shy when spotted by photographers, the infamous Hollywood hotel is not somewhere people go if they want to keep a low profile, showing that Chris and Gwyneth are happy to put on a united front following their split.

Gwyneth wore a white cape and pulled her blonde hair back in a casual ponytail while Chris was casual in a sweater and white T-shirt.

He looked tanned as he got behind the wheel and it's not surprising as the 37-year-old musician was spotted surfing in Santa Monica earlier in the day.

The Coldplay frontman - who has children Apple nine and eight-year-old Moses with Gwyneth - cooled off during the LA heatwave as he caught some waves and showed his skills on the board.

He was joined by friends for his chilled out beach day but there was no sign of Paltrow or their children as he soaked up the sun.

While speculation about the cause of the split has been rife, Chris recently hinted that it came about because of his own 'issues'.

Speaking on the Seven Network's Sunday Night programme in Australia, he said: 'If you don't open yourself up then you can't appreciate the wonder outside.

'You can be with someone very wonderful and because of your own issues, I don't want to get too personal, you can not let that be celebrated in the right way.'

And Chris revealed Coldplay's new album Ghost Stories was partly inspired by his relationship troubles with Gwyneth.

'I did make a decision to just tell the truth,' he explained. 'I just felt like "well, I'm not going to be scared of saying anything". I don't really want to sing anything that I don't really mean.'

'I think in life everyone needs to be broken in some way,'he added.

'Although it starts off seemingly like a heartbreak record, it's actually not. It's a joyful realisation that you can't escape what life's going to throw at you so just enjoy it.'

Bassist Guy Berryman said he worried Chris was being too open with the album.

'It was obviously very real and very raw and I felt that he was perhaps exposing himself too much but actually, when you think about it, it’s probably the bravest thing that you can do.' he said.

Drummer Will Champion added that  the album was one of their most important to date.

'I want to do it justice because I know how much you know how important what Chris is talking about is to him and so I felt very honoured,' he explained.

When Paltrow initially broke the news of the split on her Goop lifestyle website, the public statement revealed: 'It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate.'

In their emotional, somewhat bizarrely entitled, statement called 'Conscious Uncoupling', they admitted they had spent more than a year battling to save their marriage.

They wrote: 'We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.

'We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been.'

And it appears as if this is true as the couple are still living together, according to new legal documents.

The 41-year-old actress was granted a restraining order against a fan in April and the filing officially lists the Coldplay frontman as a resident in the family home.

The court injunction, which bars the alleged stalker from coming near Paltrow for three years, directly names Martin among the people under legal protection.

Documents, obtained by TMZ, feature a handwritten annotation that notes next to Martin's name: 'Lives w/ [Gwyneth]'.

The couple famously announced their 'conscious uncoupling' in March, but soon after the family was given a scare.

Paltrow was granted a restraining order on April 18 as a temporary measure after alleged stalker Nickolaos Gavrilis first managed to gain access to her London house before recently trying to get into her Los Angeles home.

The order states he has to stay at least 100 yards away from Gwyneth, estranged husband Chris and their two children.
