Davids Medienkritik: Mission Statement
(Note to readers: We have frequently been asked to come up with a brief mission statement that outlines the work that we do here at DMK. Here are a few initial thoughts. We may update and amend this text as we continue forward. We welcome your constructive input.)
I. MISSION STATEMENT
Germany and the United States, like all nations, have their unique histories, cultures, geographies, national values and priorities. Considering that, it is hardly a surprise that Germans and Americans do not always agree on all of the issues. It would be strange if they did. On the other hand, both countries share a great number of values and interests. We at Davids Medienkritik believe that the shared values and interests far outweigh the differences. That said, there is nothing wrong with acknowledging and discussing differences in a constructive manner. Such a dialog should be aimed at minimizing and bridging the gap between our two nations.
Unfortunately, that is not what is happening today.
A shrill yet influential segment of the German media has repeatedly sought to exploit and exacerbate transatlantic differences. This weblog is a watchdog site dedicated to the documentation of anti-Americanism in German media and the negative influence it has on Germans’ perceptions of the United States. German media coverage of the United States is frequently marked by one-sidedness, ideology, stereotypes, clichés and factual errors. Consider the words of ZDF's Washington, DC Bureau Chief Eberhard Piltz, one of the most influential correspondents in the German media today:
"ZDF Bureau Chief and Correspondent Eberhard Piltz, felt that ideology was a major impediment to quality coverage of the United States. Piltz spoke of “prejudice” and described it as “an intellectual arrogance that thinks that the American way of life, feeling, taste and thinking is inferior and not authentic.” He complained that many journalists see “the U.S. through an ideological lens,” and that “most of them grew up with the leftist, socialist dream and now they look for scapegoats.”
Or, take a moment to view the following statement from Andrei S. Markovits, a leading scholar and author on European anti-Americanism:
It is important to keep in mind that the examples documented on this site do not reflect the entire German media landscape. There are numerous highly professional, relatively unbiased news sources to be had from Berlin to Bavaria. That said: The biased, anti-American media coverage that we document here does reflect a large and influential segment of German media.

Most importantly: The type of reporting and coverage that we document on this site is having a significant and detrimental impact on German-American relations and transatlantic understanding.
Although David and I are both German citizens (I am a dual US-German citizen and David is a full German citizen), we are sometimes accused of being “anti-German” because we dare to document and criticize what is going on in German media, politics and society. Our critics seem to think that it would be better if we all just stuck our collective heads in the sand and pretended the hate mongering and America bashing simply didn’t exist. We strongly disagree. The only way to change what is happening in wide segments of the German media is to confront it head on and expose it for what it is. If that makes some people uncomfortable, so be it. The fact that we have drawn millions of readers to our site is a strong indicator that we have put our finger in a gaping wound and touched an important chord. We will continue to speak out openly, honestly and with a healthy dose of humor, opinion and biting sarcasm until this problem is confronted and addressed on a societal level. Until that day, we have no plans to stop doing what we are doing.
Above all, we thank our readers for supporting and guiding us.
II. COMMENT POLICY - BLOG PHILOSOPHY
The steady rise of our site’s visitor numbers and the accompanying increase in comments posted in response to our articles makes a precise definition of our comment policy necessary.
First: What is our blog and what is its purpose?
Davids Medienkritik is a collection of critical postings written by those who run this blog (David and Ray) on the German media. Occasionally we also publish political postings that have no connection to any particular media organization, particularly if the topic is current and plays an important role in public discussion.
Our criticism is from a “politically incorrect” point of view – our position is pro-American, pro-Israeli and pro-capitalist. As a rule we compose our postings in English because we want to inform our English-speaking audience as to the situation in the German media and where possible, also fill them in on German politics.
We welcome comments as an addition, but the main purpose of our blog is the publication of our postings along the lines of the above-described blog philosophy. Davids Medienkritik was not created to serve primarily as a discussion forum or chat room.
It is characteristic for our blog that comments are shown immediately after they are entered directly under our postings. The traditional media often offer visitors the possibility to comment, but normally apart from the articles in general discussion forums. The automatic and close connection between our postings and comments on our blog makes the special management of the comments section necessary, including the use of the TypeKey registration system.
Which comments are welcome and which are not? Which comments do we reject?
-Repeated comments from those seeking to undermine and reject the position of our posting without the presentation of facts and evidence that clearly support a rejection of our arguments.
-Comments containing falsehoods or bogus facts.
-Comments that seek to correct our translations of German to English. Please email us any corrections or comments on translation.
-Comments that seek to intentionally deceive. For example, comments left by someone immitating the name of another commenter to create confusion or to insult.
-Comments that are obscene, profanity-filled, insulting or all-of-the-above. We particularly discourage comments that aim to insult or unduly question the integrity of our blog and/or those running it. We recognize that the occasional profanity-filled rant can also have tremendous comic value. This will be a judgment call on our part.
-Comments containing unwanted advertising and/or links.
In each of these cases, we would request that you email us your opinions. We would like to decide ourselves if what you have to say actually calls for the correction of our postings. Otherwise, it is particularly time-consuming and labor-intensive for us to have to correct every published comment.
We would especially ask visitors to this blog who regularly post opposing positions to all of our postings (some of them easily post between 15 and 20 comments a day) for their understanding, when we limit or even delete their comments. We cannot and will not accept a permanent “co-blogger” or "troll" who monopolizes the conversation and sees it as his or her duty to tear down our blog and its philosophy.

Mike H. writes: "Ray, you say dialogue which implies reciprocity from your American readers. I have heard an animus from time to time. That unfortunately includes me also. Tempers are hard things to control."
My response: "I agree. Sometimes I see comments here from both Germans and Americans that clearly don't reflect the mission of this site. Sometimes the comments are anything but constructive and we have taken a lot of heat over that. Some people are understandably angry and upset at the outrageous behavior of the German media, but some people clearly go too far and start bashing the entire country in an unfair way. It is important to keep things in perspective and not blame an entire country for the actions of a shrill elite.
We perfectly understand the frustration out there and we don't plan to shut down our comments section. In fact, it may take a lot of people getting angry and outright pissed off before anything really changes. On the other hand, it would help if people (and you know who you are) would refrain from the outrageous and sweeping comments that serve no real purpose but to widen the divide. We recognize that nobody is perfect. We ourselves have made poor formulations at times. The key is that we try our best to achieve our mission. This is an ongoing process and we are all human."

(Anmerkung für die Leser: Wir wurden von Zeit zu Zeit gebeten ein kurzes "mission statement" zu bringen, welches unsere Arbeit hier bei DMK umreißt. Hier sind ein paar anfängliche Gedanken. Wir werden sie im Laufe der Zeit aktualisieren und ergänzen. Eure konstruktiven Ideen sind dabei willkommen.)
I. "MISSION STATEMENT"
Deutschland und die Vereinigten Staaten haben, wie alle
Nationen, ihre eigene Geschichte, Kultur, Geographie, nationalen Werte
und Prioritäten. Wenn man das berücksichtigt, ist es kaum eine
Überraschung, daß Deutsche und Amerikaner nicht immer in allen
Sachfragen übereinstimmen. Es wäre seltsam wenn sie das täten. Auf der
anderen Seite teilen beide Länder eine große Zahl an Werten und
Interessen. Wir bei Davids Medienkritik glauben, daß diese gemeinsamen
Werte und Interessen weit größer sind als die Unterschiede. Dies
vorausgesetzt, ist nichts falsch daran, die Unterschiede zu benennen
und in einer konstruktiven Weise zu diskutieren. Ein derartiger Dialog
sollte darauf zielen, den Graben zwischen unseren zwei Nationen zu
verkleinern und überbrücken.
Unglücklicherweise ist es nicht das, was heutzutage geschieht.
Ein
schriller, aber einflußreicher Teil der deutschen Medien hat wiederholt
versucht, die transatlantischen Differenzen auszubeuten und
verschlimmern. Dieses Weblog ist eine Watchdog-Seite, die sich der
Dokumentation des Antiamerikanismus in den deutschen Medien widmet
sowie dem negativen Einfluß, den dieser auf die deutsche Wahrnehmung
der Vereinigten Staaten hat. Deutsche Medienberichterstattung über die
Vereinigten Staaten ist immer wieder von Einseitigkeit, Ideologie,
Stereotypen, Klischees und fachlichen Fehlern geprägt. Man muß sich nur
die Worte von Eberhard Piltz, dem Chef des ZDF-Büros in Washington, in
Erinnerung rufen:
"Der Chef des ZDF-Büros in Washington und Korrespondent
Eberhard Piltz hatte das Gefühl, daß Ideologie ein Haupthindernis für
eine qualitativ hochwertige Berichterstattung über die Vereinigten
Staaten ist. Piltz sprach von "Vorurteilen" und beschrieb das ganze als
"eine intellektuelle Arroganz, die denkt, daß die amerikanische Art zu
leben, zu fühlen, ihres Geschmacks und Denkens unterlegen und nicht
authentisch ist". Er beklagte sich, daß viele Journalisten die USA
"durch eine ideologische Linse" sehen und daß die "meisten von mit dem
linken, sozialistischen Traum aufwuchsen und jetzt nach Sündenböcken
Ausschau halten".
Es ist wichtig im Hinterkopf zu behalten, daß die auf dieser
Seite dokumentierten Beispiele nicht die gesamte deutsche
Medienlandschaft widerspiegeln. Es gibt zahlreiche hochprofessionelle,
vergleichsweise unvoreingenommene Nachrichtenquellen von Berlin bis
Bayern. Dies vorangestellt, reflektiert die voreingenommene,
antiamerikanische Medienberichterstattung, die wir hier dokumentieren,
einen großen und einflußreichen Teil der deutschen Medien. Am
wichtigsten ist aber, daß die Art der Berichterstattung, die wir auf
dieser Seite dokumentieren, einen signifikanten und nachteiligen
Einfluß auf die deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen und das
transatlantische Verständnis hat.
Obwohl David und ich beide deutsche Staatsbürger sind (ich hab
eine deutsch-amerikanische Doppelstaatsbürgerschaft, während David
ausschließlich deutscher Staatsbürger ist), werden wir manchmal
beschuldigt "antideutsch" zu sein, weil wir es zu dokumentieren und
kritisieren wagen, was in Deutschlands Medien, Politik und Gesellschaft
vor sich geht. Unsere Kritiker scheinen zu denken, daß es besser wäre,
wenn wir alle kollektiv den Kopf in den Sand stecken und vorgeben
würden, daß die Hetzpropaganda und das Amerikabashing gar nicht
existieren. Hier müssen wir entschieden widersprechen. Der einzige Weg
zu ändern, was in weiten Teilen der deutschen Medien passiert, ist sich
damit auseinanderzusetzen und es als das zu darzustellen was es ist.
Wenn das einigen Leuten unangenehm ist, sei's drum. Die Tatsache, daß
wir Millionen von Lesern zu unserer Seite gezogen haben, ist ein
starker Indikator dafür, daß wir den Finger auf eine klaffende Wunde
gelegt und ein wichtigen Punkt angesprochen haben. Wir werden
fortfahren das auszusprechen, offen, ehrlich und mit einer angemessenen
Prise Humor, einer eigenen Meinung und beißendem Sarkasmus, bis dieses
Problem auf gesellschaftlicher Ebene angegangen und angesprochen wurde.
Bis zu diesem Tag haben wir nicht die Absicht in dem, was wir tun,
innezuhalten.
Vor allem aber danken wir unseren Lesern dafür, daß sie uns unterstützen und leiten.
II. Unsere Kommentar-Regeln - Blog-Philosophie
Das Wachstum der Besucherzahl unseres Blogs und
damit auch die Zunahme der Kommentare zu unseren Postings macht eine
präzisere Definition unserer Kommentar-Regeln notwendig.
Zunächst: Was ist und was will unser Blog?
Davids Medienkritik ist eine Sammlung kritischer Stellungnahmen der Betreiber dieses Blogs zu Inhalten deutscher Medien. Gelegentlich veröffentlichen wir politische Stellungnahmen auch ohne Bezug zu bestimmten Medien, wenn die Thematik in der öffentlichen Diskussion gerade eine wichtige Rolle spielt.
Wir kritisieren von einem "politisch unkorrekten" Standpunkt aus - unsere Position ist pro-amerikanisch, pro-israelisch und pro-kapitalistisch. Wir verfassen unsere Postings in der Regel in Englisch, weil wir englischsprachige Besucher über die Verhältnisse in den deutschen Medien - und wenn möglich in der deutschen Politik - informieren möchten.
Wir begrüßen Kommentare als Ergänzung, aber der Hauptzweck unseres Blogs ist die Veröffentlichung unserer Postings entlang der oben beschriebenen Blog-Philosophie. Davids Medienkritik ist nicht in erster Linie als Diskussions-Forum oder als Chat-Room gedacht.
Es ist charakteristisch für unseren Blog, daß Kommentare unmittelbar nach der Eingabe direkt unter den Postings auftauchen. Traditionelle Medien bieten zwar in ihrer Online-Version häufig Kommentar-Möglichkeiten an, aber eher getrennt von den Artikeln, in allgemeinen Diskussionsforen. Die automatische enge Verknüpfung von Posting und Kommentaren in unserem Blog macht ein besonderes Kommentar-Management notwendig. Deswegen benutzen wir auch das TypeKey System.
Welche Kommentare sind uns willkommen, und von welchen bitten wir abzusehen? Welche Kommentare lehnen wir ab?
- Kommentare die wiederholt gepostet werden und zu einer in einem Posting vertretenen Meinung eine Gegenmeinung vertreten, ohne Präsentation von Fakten oder Beweisen, die unsere Positionen widerlegen.
- Kommentare, die unrichtige Tatsachenbehauptungen enthalten.
- Kommentare die unter falschen Namen abgegeben werden bzw. mit der Absicht andere Leser zu täuschen oder deren Namen beleidigend nachzuahmen oder imitieren.
- Kommentare, die versuchen die deutsch-englischen Übersetzungen, die wir häufig in unseren Postings zitieren, zu korrigieren.
-Kommentare, die unerwünschte Links oder Werbung enthalten.
In allen diesen Fällen nicht willkommener Kommentare bitten wir, uns Ihre Ansicht per E-Mail mitzuteilen. Wir möchten selbst entscheiden, ob Ihre Beiträge tatsächlich eine Richtigstellung unserer Postings erfordern. Es ist für uns sonst nämlich außerordentlich arbeitsaufwendig, bereits veröffentlichte Kommentare richtig zu stellen. In der Regel kommt es dann zu erneuten Gegendarstellungen, die uns wiederum zu Äußerungen veranlassen müßten. Solche mäandernden Diskussionsverläufe sind nicht Sinn und Zweck dieses Blogs.
Wir bitten insbesondere einige Besucher unseres Blogs, die regelmäßig Gegenpositionen zu allen unseren Postings veröffentlichen (einzelne dieser uns gegenüber kritisch eingestellten Besucher veröffentlichen in unserem Blog mühelos 15 bis 20 Kommentare pro Tag), um Verständnis, wenn wir ihre Kommentare begrenzen oder gar löschen. Wir wollen und werden in unserem Blog kein permanentes "Co-Blogging" einzelner gegen unsere Blog-Philosophie erlauben.
