  • Official investigation launched into incident in Pembrokeshire, West Wales
  • Animal welfare group said sheep 'suffered considerable pain' before death

By Daily Mail Reporter

This sickening photograph shows a sheep suffering an agonising death - trapped by the hydraulic roof of a cattle wagon.

Drivers watched in horror as they saw the lorry with the sheep's head crushed between the heavy top meant to prevent animals from falling out.

The farmer was eventually flagged down on the country road but it was too late for the sheep which died from strangulation.

Government agriculture officials are now investigating the alleged animal cruelty in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.

The photograph was taken by a member of an animal charity who was driving behind the cattle lorry.

It caused outrage when it was posted on the Facebook page of the charity which works to protect horses.

A spokesman for the group called VANAH said: 'It is very clear that the codes of conduct which regulate the movement of these animals were ignored.

'The driver loaded the vehicle with live sheep, and one somehow, got trapped in the door when it was closed.

'The sheep would not have survived very long due to the immense pressure of the closing of the ramp.

'It suffered considerable pain, hung there bleeding or suffocating or with a broken neck.'

The sheep was one of hundreds in the cattle wagon being transported from a farm for sale at a market in West Wales.

The interior of the transporter has three different levels to load in as many sheep as possible.

But, according to one livestock haulier, it appears this sheep has its head trapped by the hydraulic roof when it was been brought down to prevent animals from falling from the top foor during transport.

A Pembrokeshire County Council spokesman said: 'Our Animal Health Team is currently investigating in conjunction with the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

'We believe the photograph to be genuine. We are also looking at the design of this particular wagon.'

The comments below have been moderated in advance.

People who breed sheep, transport them and slaughter them have no regard for them whatsoever. They're simply units to be processed. It's the reason I gave up meat over thirty years ago. We would not allow pet dogs to be treated like this, but it's okay for farm animals? A nation of animal lovers? Hardly.

This is cruelty beyond belief....this farmer needs punishing severely. How could you not see that poor animal. It's a disgrace.

Sadly this is just the tip of the iceberg. Hauliers in this country are bad enough - and it is unbelievable that the person who secured the door did not see this poor animal - but worse yet the UK allows foreign hauliers to take live animals abroad to face hideous journeys and death in places where there are no animal welfare laws. Over the last few weeks literally thousands of sheep have traveled, in appalling conditions, through the Port Of Dover. Live export should not be allowed and it is time our government took action to stop this attrocity.

'It suffered considerable pain, hung there bleeding or suffocating or with a broken neck.' >>>>>>>>> don't imagine for one second that the other sheep had a dignified, pain free ending either! In lots of cases they're not stunned as it's too expensive if the workers are on piece work, although I know some of them just like to inflict pain and suffering for their own amusement. They'll probably have had their throats slit, slipped about in their own blood, whilst slowly bleeding to death. The others will have been queuing up for their turn and will have seen what will happen to them next. It's barbaric. We don't need to do this to any animal. Our appetites don't justify the suffering these animals go through. Most of which are suffering from birth.

If you see the feature on the 'Banksy Fresh Meat Truck artwork'; & then you see the disgusting event above then I think we can see the point Banksy is trying to make. I am no vegetarian, but all living things must be treated humanely and those livestock that die to feed us are no exception, there should be prosecution if we expect standards to be met.

I always thought Welsh farmers were more caring about their sheep.

I don't understand how this one sheep that died in such unpleasant circumstances made it onto this website when there are millions of animals a year dying gruesome deaths in halal abattoirs. Where's the outrage for those pitiful animals? Throats slit and bled to death in front of the other animals who are about to die in the same way. This is tragic yes, but it's the tip of a very gruesome iceberg.
