Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale lead the celebrations as Real Madrid took to the streets of the Spanish capital to celebrate their Champions League victory over city rivals Atletico.

The Real players celebrated with fans in the early hours on Sunday morning on an open top bus in Cibeles Square in Madrid just hours after the 4-1 win in extra time.

Carlo Ancelotti and his players headed straight back to Madrid after the final in Lisbon and the celebrations went on long into the night.

Team captains Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos shared the honour of draping a team flag around the neck of the Cibeles statue in the centre of the fountain in the square.

Music blared from a makeshift stage kept supporters going until around 6am, when the Real team, wearing 'La Decima' on their shirts in reference to the 10th title they had coveted for 12 years, finally arrived back with the trophy.

It could have been so different after Diego Godin put Atletico in front nine minutes before half time, and Diego Simeone's side looked destined to get their hands on the trophy but Sergio Ramos popped up in the 93rd minute to send it to extra-time.

The crucial moment came five minutes into the second period of extra-time when Bale nodded home at the far post after good work from Angel Di Maria. Disappointingly for Atletico, they collapsed after that, with Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo making it 4-1 to take the title back to the Bernabeu for the tenth time in their history.

Bale – who signed from Spurs in the summer for £86million - insisted that he and his team-mates always believed they could come back to win, despite being behind for most of the final.

'For us when we play our own football we win matches and it was literally just about attacking and keep doing what we do best,' Bale said.

'We believe in that and we believed if we kept doing that we would win.'

During normal time it looked like being a frustrating evening for Bale, with the former Spurs winger missing three decent opportunities, but the Welshman was pleased to see his efforts rewarded in the end.

'I've learned from past experience to just keep going, forget about the chances you've missed, and keep persevering. Thankfully I got the decisive goal,' he added.

'It was great to see it go in.'

With the Champions League triumph rounding off his first year at Real Madrid, following his world record £85million move last summer, the 24-year-old now has an appetite for more success.

'I came here to play in big competitions and win trophies. We want to win more now,' he said.

'This is what every footballer dreams of and it doesn't get any bigger in club football.'

The criticisms of Bale and Ronaldo are way over the top. They were undoubtedly the two players who contributed most in terms of getting Real to the final and there were excuses for their relatively poor shows in the final. I have never seen a player as nervous as Bale was prior to kick-off and this experience will have done him the world of good. Next season he will be spectacular. Ronaldo was clearly not fully fit and was saving a little of himself for the world cup. Amazing how players like Ronaldo, Messi and Bale can play outstanding game after game yet when they have ONE bad one all the haters appear !

By the way, I wonder what is wrong with Bale right leg. He should have used his right leg to kick the ball when he had two opportunities on yesterday game. Don't tell me that he can not use his right leg to kick the ball when he was paid as the most expensive soccer player in the world. If you see the video clip, he used his left leg to kick the ball twice and both missed and the ball went to the left side of the goal perimeter.

The big different between the two teams are physical; no wonder the Real Madrid costed $425 millions pound and Atletico costed only $75 millions pound. For Bale, that was not an easy header goal; you see that Bale jumped high to head that ball and that ball is almost out of range....Well done Bale. Here are the rank for this game: 1) Ramos (without this dude, you know Real will be a super loser) 2) Di Maria (this dude knew how to dribble the ball via all the Atletico defenders to the goal opportunity; Atletico defenders had problem to stop Di Maria) 3) Bale (His ball header was not an easy one; but he managed to make it because he got best physical form and quickness; so he earned it). He sealed the winning game. 4) Marcelo ( This guy sealed the game winner for 100%) 5) Modric and Ronaldo are ok. Ronaldo has the best body for soccer player.

Ronaldo doesn't party with Bale......Ronaldo parties with Ronaldo,he's not even in Real shirt on bus. He is so up himself and he does not like Bale or anyone else getting the limelight....however,I suspect Bale will continue to shine and Ronnie will retire gracefully to open a dress shop or hairdressers.

As a United fan it was hard seeing Ronny and Bale celebrate on the biggest stage.....I imagine Spurs fans feel the same. Look how horrendous we've both been this season.

Both Bale and Ronaldo were awful and should stay low.....The way Ronaldo celebrated his penalty was simply embarrassing.... as if it was important for the result....(and he dived as usual)

Ronaldo just came back from injury so of course he wouldn't be at his best. He set Bale up 3 times (Bale missed those shots, assisted Marcelo's goal, scored one himself (even if it was a penalty) and was also vital for Bale's goal as he was the one who tracked back to LB position to help defend to pass the ball forward. Plus he scored in the final, in his country, was top scorer so he can do whatever he likes.
