Gloucester City gave title-chasing AFC Telford United a real fright after a valiant display at the New Bucks Head.

Jake Gosling had given the Tigers a shock lead early against the Bucks, who are fighting head-to-head with North Ferriby United for the sole automatic promotion berth.

Adam Farrell levelled the contest on the half hour with a coolly taken penalty, given against Jack Harris for a tackle on Alan Moogan.

Referee Ian Hussin awarded another penalty to the Bucks within 45 seconds of the second period, a harsh handball by Matt Coupe, which Green brilliantly saved from Farrell.

The Tigers impressed throughout, but were undone late with Sean Clancy bumbling through the City defence to roll the ball under Green for a crucial victory in their promotion push.

Tim Harris’ side began the game unthreatened by Telford’s title credentials with early opportunities with Coupe seeing a header deflect wide followed by another wicked deflection forcing Tom Webb’s drilled effort wide.

The only notable moment for the home side as the Tigers dominated the opening exchanges was with striker Andy Owens booked for a comically bad dive trying to win a penalty against Green.

Gloucester capitalised on the pressure and opening the scoring via the quick feet of Gosling who rolled the ball, almost in slow motion, to the far post that had Ryan Young rooted to the spot.

The Tigers continued to enjoy the lionshare of possession until Telford came to life with Whalley unleashing a stunning effort that dipped just over the crossbar.

The impetus was now with the hosts as Moogan burst into the box only to be brought down by Harris; Farrell stepped up and equalised with aplomb.

Moogan was involved again shortly after and forced goalkeeper Green into a quite astonishing save, flicking his fingers at full stretch, before collecting up Farrell’s weak second attempt.

Green produced a second stunning save in as many minutes, this time denying Owens’ free header from six yards out.

An end to end half ensued as Gosling was completely terrorising the promotion candidates, and after gliding through three challenges the Exeter City loanee saw his shot drill inches wide.

Another stinging effort forced Young into a smart save with Gosling epitomising the confidence of the Tigers first-half display.

In contrast, the second half saw Telford explode out of the blocks as they were awarded a second penalty in under a minute with Coupe apparently handling in the area after a fast cross cannoned in.

Farrell stepped up for a second time, but Green stood firm and saved the penalty; arguably justice was served.

The intent was clear for the New Bucks Head outfit with Dan Preston missing a gilt-edged header from three yards; a huge let-off for Harris’ troops.

Adam Mann and defender Harris attempted to gain contact on Billy Jones’ teasing cross, but neither could as the chance went begging.

Matty McGinn almost stamped an imprint on the game, but his free-kick fizzes past the far post.

Telford, keen on matching or bettering North Ferriby’s result against Harrogate, continued to press as Simon Grand’s sneaky effort deflected agonisingly wide; with half of the stadium celebrating thinking it had put the Bucks ahead.

Soon after, it was a reality; McGinn’s throughball was latched onto by Clancy who somehow managed to squeeze the attempt under Green and into the back of the net.

They’ve could’ve sealed the game second later, only for Green to incredibly push the ball away from Tony Gray’s advances after Whalley’s devilish cross.

With time running out, the Tigers had a wonderful opportunity but Rory Winters’ leaping header was directed just the wrong side of the upright.

The hosts managed to hold on during the five minutes of added on time, but the Tigers certainly pushed the potential winners of the Skrill North to the max.
