By Daily Mail Reporter

She received critical acclaim for her role in the 2013 drama The Book Thief.

And now 14-year-old Sophie Nélisse has landed another challenging role, this time as a foster child in search of her exotic birth mother in The Great Gilly Hopkins.

On Thursday the teen was spotted shedding tears as she filmed an emotional scene opposite Oscar-winner Kathy Bates in New York.

Sophie was dressed in a green trench coat and blue ballet flats with her blonde locks worn down and sporting slight curls on the end.

To play her dowdy character, Kathy was decked out in a shapeless maroon cardigan over a blue housedress and a pair of flat sandals.

The 65-year-old sported a wavy short bob style haircut with no makeup as they filmed on the streets of the Big Apple.

In the scene, the duo could be seen having an intense conversation as Kathy held Sophie's face with her hands and appeared to start to cry.

Afterwards Bates pulled the child star towards her as they hugged and embraced sharing a tender moment.

The pair are working on the film adaptation of the children's novel of the same name by Katherine Paterson.

It tells the story of a wise-cracking young girl in foster care who longs to be reunited with her mysterious and exotic birth mother.

Sadly The Book Thief was a very beautiful but dull movie. Sophie Nelisse has a huge future ahead of her.

Kathy Bates is the best actress of out time- however Hollywood has turned me off with cramming their political agenda down my throat when I hate politics, so I no longer watch movies of any kind....just reality shows.
