'Hang up and call 911,' can be heard on this chilling recording of a homeowner calling the police for help when they are in danger.

The family screams in the background telling the robbers to leave the premises.

Apparently the phone was transferred to voice mail after the dispatcher tried moving the call from the fire department to law enforcement.

'somebody just came into my house, four people just came into my house, they beat the s**** out of me and my wife and my stepmother, then they robbed us, ' said the homeowner.

Police say that the suspects broke in the home in the middle of the night and fired shots at the homeowners, just inches away from a sleeping baby.

'The male inside said, I have a gun and will use it - the gun battle begins. They pistol-whipped the female and took a weapon and pointed it to the child and said they would kill the child if they don't get what they want,' said Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco.

Fox reports that the county released a timeline showing that officers where dispatched almost 4 minutes after the call but they said that this did nothing to slow their response time.

They said that they will take measures in their own hands to make sure nothing like this ever happens again but they didn't elaborate on those plans.

They said that this attack was a targeted one and that residents should not be concerned for their safety.

Three of the four robbers have been captured, including the man who was shot.

'I'm at a loss for words, had to protect my family,' the homeowner said about the incident.

The Mail Online contacted the Pasco County Police Department but no one was available for comment.

He should not feel bad for shooting, he was protecting his family, and in this case it was justified. I don't understand how the operator could make such a mistake but thank God the family is OK.

Where I live it is very rural, bear attacks are more likely than home invasions. My closest neighbor is over a mile away. Everyone owns guns, we are very good with them, usually starting at the age of six. I've lived in Europe, you across the pond have no idea how rural we are. Thank G-D we have our 2nd amendment.

so, this is why obama wants to take away your guns, so you cannot protect yourself. But he has people protecting him 254/7. All for me, none for thee (obama's mantra).

Chalk up another success for a legal gun owner.

And here is a perfect example of why many of us will never give up their guns. The police aren't going to save you when a bunch of thugs break into your home in the middle of the night. Bravo to this man, and I hope these 4 losers get prison sentences long enough to insure they're old men by the time they walk out.

Police can't protect you or your family from people like this. Self defense is always your own responsibility. Boom!

What a good job the householder had a gun, we don¿t have that right over here to protect our family.

Good on the homeowner for defending his family. That foulup never should have happened, but he's very lucky he lives in a state with commonsense gun laws and a 'stand your ground' law. If this poor family was living here in Massachusetts and he shot one of the intruders, even with a legally owned gun, he would be charged with attempted murder, and the charges would be dropped against the 'poor disadvantaged' robbers. The state would probably help them sue the homeowner as well.
