Sonja Yelich is a poet. Her earlier writings are very similar to Lorde's song lyrics. I wonder who really write's Lorde's music.

What's the point after 30 years? You're considered ''common law'' anyway. It almost seems hypocritical after raising a family and refusing to submit to convention for whatever reasons you had, to suddenly jump into something that wasn't necessary when your kids were young.

I do not know about New Zealand law but in the USA if the parents are together that long they have common law marriage so most of the laws that apply to long married couple apply to those folks who have live together for a long time. It is nice though they decided to be fully committed

Of course NZ has common law marriages (probably before most other countries). Maybe, just maybe it was for romantic reasons....

I don't think Marriage is NEEDED for anyone. It is a choice they WANT to do. I think her parents got married for legality reasons. It is unfortunate you HAVE to be married for certain laws to stand in your favor. I am speaking as an American, so I don't know the laws of other countries. And just because she posted that her dad proposed to her mom, it does not mean she is so excited that she could now die. She is happy just like she was happy on her 10th birthday. I doubt she is happier now that her parents are going to get married.

When people say "our kids don't care if we get married or not", here is proof positive that they do. On a side note, I'd love to have hair like Lorde's - it's absolutely gorgeous!

Her father obviously is the decisive sort. A real risk taker and good at commitment - not! Instead of getting excited she should be telling her mother to go for an adult man.

Firstly, what makes you think it's the father who didn't want to get married all these years? And secondly, who cares? They've been together for 30 years, so they're doing better than some people who get married right off the hop and have a huge ceremony, only to divorce 5 years later.

All of you who say "oh, marriage doesn't matter and who cares about kids out of wedlock, it's the modern age" take note. The girl is ecstatic that her parents are finally getting married - it matters.

Why on earths would they bother to marry after so long? It prob has something to do with the fact lords is worth millions now and daddy needs to keep the family close!
