By Ryan Smith

It's the engagement that captured headlines last week - but it came about after an initial rejection.

David Arquette has revealed that his July 2 marriage proposal to Christina McClarty in Malibu, California, didn't go as smoothly as planned.

As the Hollywood actor basks in the joy of approaching wedding bells, he has admitted that his romantic overture was initially rebuffed.

'We were at a restaurant in Malibu,' Page Six has quoted Christina, 33, as telling Aspen Peak magazine’s Erin Lentz.

David, 42, promptly cut in: 'I take her outside... and then I ask her, and she’s like, "No, what are you doing? There are so many people watching!"

David added: 'I had a do-over, and it worked.'

However, the 'do-over' - which happened in front of David's daughter Coco, 10, and the couple's 10-week-old son Charlie  - was captured by paparazzi cameras, thanks to the outdoor ocean-front location.

On Sunday, the newly-engaged couple stepped out at Aspen Peak's 10th Anniversary celebration in scenic Aspen, Colorado.

David held up Christina's hand to show off her sparkling ring - a big blue stone surrounded by diamonds, while his bride-to-be beamed.

The event, which was held at David's own Bootsy Bellows in the posh mountain resort, was the couple's first public appearance since he asked her to marry him at Maestros Ocean Club in Malibu.

David and Christina, who have been together off and on since 2011 and welcomed their son Charlie on April 28, were even wearing colour-coordinated outfits.

The actor looked spiffy in grey jeans, a black-and-white striped shirt, red belt and navy denim jacket.

TV personality Christina wore a Bohemian-inspired navy dress with ivory lace details around the hemline, along with a black leather bolero and delicately strapped black heels.

David's proposal came just six days after his ex-wife Courteney Cox announced her engagement to boyfriend of eight months Johnny McDaid.

He just comes across as bitter and spiteful, especially proposing 24 hours after Courtney announced her engagement. Has is fiancé got no common sense.
