Stolen School Checks

Updated: Thursday, July 3 2014, 11:11 PM EDT
Buncombe County Schools is dealing with the theft of checks and employee personal information.  School officials say the checks were taken from the U.S. mail, forged and cashed for about $20,000.  Thieves also got the names and social security numbers of 173 school employees.

The checks were sent from the school system to an investment firm that handles the supplemental retirement accounts for school employees.  I.N.G. direct, the Buncombe Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Postal Service are now investigating.

School administrators were able to stop payment on all but two of the 18 stolen checks.  They're now working to get the employees money refunded while keeping them informed about efforts to protect their potentially stolen identities.
