IRC

About

Since 2010, some friends and I have run an IRC channel for the active discussion of topics pertaining to programming languages and mathematics. Our intention was and continues to be to develop an intellectual community of people who are simultaneously students and teachers. Some specific topics include functional programming, software engineering, problem modeling, and compilers. Over time, there has been emphasis on the programming languages Scheme, Common Lisp, Standard ML, Haskell, and Scala; and on the book Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. We welcome and promote discussion of other languages, books, and topics as well.

Channel Policy

While we encourage a free and open discussion about an array of technical topics, most of the participants of the channel are human, and as such, emotions and differences may arise. As such, we maintain a channel policy.

The purpose of these rules is to ensure a professional, maximally inclusive environment, free of harassment, abuse, or inappropriate content. Everyone should feel safe and welcome in #symbo1ics.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to,

  • verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion,
  • sexual images/links/comments,
  • intimidation/threats,
  • stalking or constant unsolicited private messaging, and
  • sustained disruption.

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the channel operator may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the channel. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact Quadrescence or qu1j0t3 immediately so that proper action can be taken.

We expect all channel participants to follow these rules.

(With thanks to Anniepoo for suggestions and encouraging channel policy.)
