THE FIRST Tamil satellite digital audio broadcast from the country, VRG's Thamizh Thendral, which has been on air since September 2000, is much sought after by Tamil listeners in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. The programmes that include drama, literature, religion, chat shows, film music and sound tracks, cater for all ages, round the clock.
The World Space system, through which Thamizh Thendral is broadcast, combines satellite and digital transmission. The highly advanced satellite receivers, introduced in South Asian countries as Asia Star, are useful, modern gadgets of information.
The Thamizh Thendral broadcast is completely digitised only digital discs are used. The frequency in which it is broadcast is 1213, in the west beam of Asia Star over World Space Satellite receivers. According to Raji VRG, producer, gadgets to receive signals from digital satellites are available in the market, and the prices range from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 12,000. The gadgets can be fitted to the radio set. Thamizh Thendral listeners from all over Asia and the SAARC countries number nearly 10 lakhs. So in a way, Thamizh Thendral is a unifying force.
