Toxic singer Britney Spears has been an on and off smoker since she was a teenager.

But the 32-year-old seems to be taking more care these days about indulging in the unhealthy habit while her children are watching.

After a trip to the local mall Saturday with eight-year-old Sean and Jaden, aged seven, in Westlake Village - the Los Angeles suburb where the family lives – the blonde was spotted near the side of a building, puffing out of eye shot.

Athletic family: The 32-year-old once played high school basketball and likes to give her boys pointers

Public criticism has often been leveled at the mother-of-two for smoking near her children from her marriage to Kevin Federline – and there have been dozens of photos published over the years proving that she did.

But the Baby One More Time star, who looked toned in black shorts and a loose-fitting Aloha State tank top during the family shopping session, now seems to be conscious of the criticism.

Her body language when she took the first drag – her arms were pulled in stealthily and she blew the smoke up into the air – appeared to be of someone who was being crafty.

Plus, judging from the basketball gear her boys were dressed in, the dancer is promoting fitness in the home.

Although she’s in the middle of a two-year, $30 million dollar deal to headline in Las Vegas, there was an audio clip leaked this week of her voice sounding strained and flat as she rehearsed a taping of Alien.

Producer William Orbit, who worked on Alien, has defended Spears from widespread criticism and argued that the vocal was 'not supposed to be shared with millions of listeners.'

The singer was merely warming up and helping sound engineers prepare to record 'while having a cup of herb tea,' Orbit insisted.

So sad...Britney came to Hawaii and I didn't get to see her. So far I've the only recognized talented I've seen on the island has been Bruce Jenner. :-(
