'I had to laugh, so as not to cry': Savannah Guthrie hits back at Today viewers who slammed her maternity style

By Lauren Lumsden

Today show host Savannah Guthrie has issued a response to viewers who 'feel the need to air their critiques in sharp or explicit terms' about her maternity wear.

Ms Guthrie, who's 42 years old, said she 'had to laugh, so as not to cry,' when one viewer went so far as to accuse her of wearing tighter clothes to flaunt her baby bump.

'First of all, at 8.5 months pregnant, there's really no hiding that ever-expanding belly,' she wrote on Today.com this morning. 'Wearing a loose muumuu is not going to do the trick, And, believe me, I haven't worn anything tight in months.'

Ms Guthrie said she's used to viewers voicing their opinions on what she wears, and that 'it comes with the territory,' but that during her pregnancy 'people are weighing in more than ever.'

'Um, I guess all I can say is thank you for your feedback?' she wrote to all her naysayers.

Luckily, she's received more compliments than critiques, for which she expressed gratitude.

'When you're expanding to the point you weigh more than all your coworkers, when your legs sprout cankles, and your face breaks out like a teenager - it's so nice to hear a kind or encouraging word,' she wrote.

Ms Guthrie said she opts for maternity wear in stretchy, elastic fabrics that she hopes 'will fit whatever shape [she] has left' and that she can wear from one month to the next.

Ms Guthrie and Today contributor Zanna Roberts Rassi, who just gave birth to twins, recently did a segment on the evolution of maternity wear - from baggy clothes intending to hide bumps in the fifties, to contemporary fashion that celebrates them.

'At 8.5 months pregnant, there's really no hiding that ever-expanding belly. Wearing a loose muumuu is not going to do the trick'

'One of my earliest memories is seeing my cousin in a bright yellow bikini when she was seven months pregnant,' Ms Guthrie recalls. 'She looked fabulous.'

Since she knows how it feels, Ms Guthrie said she applauds all the pregnant woman who are 'currently hot-flashing their way through the summer and trying to maintain their sense of comfort and self-confidence at the same time.'

Hormones are going wild during pregnancy, unless you know her personally, I would refrain from making such comments.

Of course she will look "good" in the photos she picked out to put online. Duh! Who cares?

You know. I don't know why she's moaning about people's comments about her fashion sense when the Today show colleagues made fun of Ann for her choice in clothes (i.e., the big bird comment). I will never like this woman until her colleagues make it right with Ann. She could have stood up for a person being unfairly treated but instead chose to play along and take the bullied victim's job. That to me, does not say she had nothing to do with Ann or the way Ann was treated.

Look at the pictures and see all the wrinkles in the skirts of her clothing....and in the black dress in the breast area and hips. Those are caused by being too tight. What does she think, we are all morons???

She doesn't look any better or any worse than anyone else. Not worth discussion.

All along, Savannah has looked elegant, stylish and summery.I am so tired of the celebs who think we need/want to see their flesh and lumps. There is absolutely NOTHING pretty about 7/8/9 months hanging over a pair of jeans.
