An attorney for the New England Patriots revealed that text messages sent between accused killer Aaron Hernandez and the team's head coach were provided to Massachusetts prosecutors.
The lawyer disclosed that 34 texts between coach Bill Belichick and the former tight end were handed over as evidence in the investigation of a 2013 killing in which Hernandez is charged.
The texts were sent between December 2012 and April 2013, only two months Hernandez infamously fled to the team's Stadium while news helicopters followed his every move. He was escorted off the property after about half an hour.
Attorney Andrew Phelan said Friday it's important to clarify the material listed in court documents this week as 33 pages of texts, many of which were sent in the months and weeks leading up to the shooting death of Hernandez friend Odin Lloyd.
'Earlier this week, a report indicated that an exchange of text messages between the team’s head coach and Mr. Hernandez totaled 33 pages,' Phelan said in a statement.
'While it is unknown how the texts were printed or displayed, I thought it was important to clarify that during an early investigation conducted by state prosecutors, the team produced a total of 34 text messages (not pages of texts) spanning a period of five months.'
Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to murder in the killing of Lloyd, a semi-pro football player whose body was found near the former Patriot's North Attleborough home.
The messages were on a list of discovery documents prosecutors gave Hernandez's attorneys. Also listed were statements Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft gave police.
Hernandez also has pleaded not guilty to killing two other men in 2012.
He played the 2012 season with the Patriots after the double homicide, which prosecutors say arose from a disagreement in a club Hernandez and friends were in just hours before the shootings.
If found guilty, it will mean Hernandez took the field after killing two men, and possibly while plotting the death of a third.
