But Leonardo DiCaprio was the subject of a few jibes from some quarters about having piled on the pounds as he heads towards his 40th birthday.

Despite the taunts, Leo flaunted his new found paunch on the beach in Miami on Saturday, stepping out in a pair of striped board shorts as he hit the water.

The 39-year-old sported wet hair as he emerged from the water, before drying off with a fluffy white towel. Perhaps he was feeling a little self-conscious as he kept the towel around his tum for a little while before kicking back in the sun.

The Titanic actor pulled his growing locks back into a short ponytail, and accessorised with a pair of sunglasses and a pendant necklace.

With his chest fully exposed, the actor looked to be getting quite the tan over his exposed skin.

Likely feeling fatigued after splashing around in the salty water, Leo looked ready to snooze on the waiting beach chairs covered with towels as he longingly glanced towards the furniture.

But Leo's 22-year-old model girlfriend Toni Garrn did not appear to accompany the actor for his beach day.

The pair were previously spotted in Los Angeles watching the World Cup match between Germany and Brazil.

Back in April, Leo's weight caught the attention of TMZ as he vacationed in Bora Bora, who remarked of the actor, 'What isn't Gilbert Grape eating?

But it was back to reality for the actor on Sunday when he stepped out at Miami International Airport in Florida to board a flight.

The 39-year-old looked barely recognisable with scruffy facial hair, a brown cap and sunglasses.

Leo kept it casual in a navy jumper and smart trousers but added a touch of bling with a gold pendant around his neck.

Meanwhile, the actor will once again hit the big screen with his upcoming drama, The Revenant.

The film follows the story of Hugh Glass (Leonardo), a man who is abandoned by two men after being attacked by a bear while traveling through the woods, The Hollywood Reporter states.

After his attack, Hugh somehow summons the strength to continue his hike through the wilderness, the website adds.

Leonardo stars opposite Tom Hardy and Will Poulter in the film - which is in pre-production set to be released in 2015.

'...once one of the biggest heart-throbs in the world'...still is in my eyes. So what, he's put on a few pounds since he was in his 20's. Who hasn't!? He's still gorgeous and having a bit of extra weight doesn't change the fact that he's a blummin good actor. It's shameful that he's being criticised for this. I bet the reporter who wrote this article is no Adonis.
