One in ten Britons admit to forgetting their passport when they set off on their overseas sunshine holiday, according to a new report yesterday.

Many other holidaymakers confess to failing to remember their airline tickets and hotel reservation details before heading for the airport.

But when it comes to packing the holiday essentials the division between the sexes has never been more apparent, the latest research shows.

Forgotten items: One in 10 holidaymakers forgets their passport - with men worse than women

TOP 10 FORGOTTEN ITEMS

1. Toiletries
2. Phone charger
3. Passport
4. Tickets/flight/hotel paperwork
5. Swimwear
6. Underwear
7. Suncream
8. Camera
9. To book the hotel
10. Sunglasses

Looking cool is a priority for men, as nearly one in two (46 per cent) say they could not leave home without their sunglasses, while for more than two thirds (67 per cent) of women suncream is the top must-have vacation item, according to a survey for the Original Factory Shop.

Surprisingly both items came above even underwear, at second place in importance for men (44 per cent) and women (66 per cent).

Swimwear was a close third for men but women's love of shoes made footwear the next favourite necessity for women.

However, while we are busy packing things to ensure we look cool and stay cool with our sunnies and Factor 30, it seems we are inclined to forget some of the necessities of travel abroad with one in ten people admitting to forgetting their passports.

The vital documentation was the top most forgotten item by men (13 per cent) however only 6 per cent of women made the same mistake.

Both sexes agree that much of the vacation chores fall to mums with 84 per cent of women and 65 per cent of men agreeing that mothers often get a raw deal on holiday because they generally organise, shop and pack, as well as look after the family when they are away.

The survey discovered that 63 per cent of women do the majority of the holiday shopping for themselves and their family, and 59 per cent do the majority of the packing.

Not surprisingly nearly three quarters of British women find preparing for a family holiday stressful, compared to just over half of the men surveyed.

The average Brit spends £112.89 on pre-holiday shopping and visits three to four stores to get everything they need and still more than half admit to forgetting something when going on vacation.

Colin Leggatt, marketing director of The Original Factory Shop, said: 'Going on holiday is supposed to be a time when everyone can relax and escape day-to-day life for a week or two - not worrying about forgetting something important or spending a ton of money.

'At The Original Factory Shop, customers will find everything for their holidays - from suncream to swimwear - all under one roof, taking away the stress of holiday shopping and leaving more time for fun and relaxation.

'Just don't forget your passport!'
