Nome Nugget (pdf), July 10, 2014: EXTRAORDINARY— Crab fisherman Frank MacFarland shows a rare blue-colored red king crab that he found in his commercial crabbing pots [...] According to ADF&G [Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game] biologists, the blue color is most likely a rare genetic mutation. Biologists also report rare occurrences of white red king crab.
ABC News, Jul 19, 2014: It is extremely unusual for red king crabs to be blue. Scott Kent, of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Nome, told the AP that blue crabs turn up “once in a blue moon.” He suspects the crab’s unusual coloring is the result of a mutation.
Anchorage Daily News, July 12, 2014 (emphasis added): Alaska The crab’s shell was a deep periwinkle, likely the result of a naturally occurring genetic mutation, Kent said. The rare discovery thrilled Norton Sound fishery managers and biologists in the Northwest Alaska city. [...] Justin Noffsker [assistant plant manager at the Norton Sound Seafood Center] said he’s never seen anything like this [...] In his 11 years with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Kent had never seen a blue red king crab either [...] In September, during a pot survey in Cape Nome, Kent saw his first white red king crab, another rare coloration believed to be caused by a genetic mutation. He has also recently seen piebald crabs, spotted with irregular patches of white. Another had a red carapace but yellow legs. All the variations are considered to be the kind of “normal, random, very rare” mutations that occur within animal populations, Kent said. The environment and the crab’s diet could play a role, he said, but he doubts it. [...] In January, wholesalers in Hokkaido, Japan, found [a blue-colored red king crab] in a Russian shipment.
Anchorage Daily News, July 12, 2014: a crab with a deep lavender shell [is] the likely result of a genetic mutation. It was a rare discovery, one that thrilled Norton Sound fishery managers and area biologists who said such sightings are few and far between.
KNOM, July 18, 2014: Onlookers have called it “shockingly bright blue,” “almost unnatural,” and “like that can’t possibly be real.” >> Full broadcast here

A tale of two countries (and one province)
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness." Mr. Dickens' opening lines from A Tale of Two Cities might have been speaking of today and the various ways various countries are facing the social-ecological dilemma of our times. Some are fools, others surprisingly wise.

great article! great find Mr. Jebus!!!
Monopoly utilities, an early idea from the era of C.A.Coffin, were considered "necessary" in the early days of the electric grid; couldn't have everyone stringing lines, or nobody would do it …
the idea of the "necessary" or "natural" monopoly;
That ship has sailed people. The lines are up. The only necessity to grant these utilities their monopolies is to guarantee "crony capitalism" as in the Southern Company's heinous project at Vogtle.
The people of Georgia are paying for these unnecessary nukes now, before they are switched on, and if their costs escalate beyond their already inflated estimates, that's a good thing for the utility: the rate payers will pay cost plus profits no matter how high the expenses soar; they are locked in, based on an early 20th century concept known as "guaranteed monopoly."
And if the plant malfunctions, leaks grossly, or explodes (these things really do happen at brand new nukes … (TMI2 was almost brand new when she melted down) there is enough money in the Price Anderson insurance pool to buy postage stamps for the letters of condolence to be sent to ten million evacuees, and not much else.
Civilian nuclear power: Biggest Governmental Fraud ever.
USA: has zero credibility on world stage, while we harbor this villain in our closet: the civilian nuclear power sector.
Unnecessary indeed!! Ask Germany. She learned her lesson about government fraud …

Savannah River Site (SRS) is a nuclear reservation in the United States in the state of South Carolina, located on land in Aiken, Allendale and Barnwell Counties adjacent to the Savannah River, 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Augusta, Georgia. The site was built during the 1950s to refine nuclear materials for deployment in nuclear weapons. It covers 310 square miles (800 km2) and employs more than 10,000 people.
A major focus is cleanup activities related to work done in the past for American nuclear buildup. Currently none of the reactors on-site are operating (see list of nuclear reactors), although two of the reactor buildings are being used to consolidate and store nuclear materials.

Its Tritium facilities are also the United States' only source of tritium, an essential component in nuclear weapons. The USA's only mixed oxide fuel (MOX) manufacturing plant is being constructed at SRS overseen by the National Nuclear Security Administration. When operational, the MOX facility will convert legacy weapons-grade plutonium into fuel suitable for commercial power reactors.[1]"

I'm curious as to where anyone said that it is from Fukushima's massive radionuclide contamination of the north pacific ocean.
If you read all the articles, it's not there.
If you read all the comments, it's not there.
I'm even more curious as to how you came to the conclusion of your final statement.
Please, I need to understand your hypothesis…

Besides we do not KNOW , definitely , why those animals are changing colour , we are only talking about possible reasons for that , and we think radiation or isotopes could have a role to play in that . In fact radioactivity may play a role in many other phenomena as well , like mass deaths etc . We are not saying IT IS CAUSING THEM DEFINTELY ,, we are just saying the researcher should look into radioactivitu as well as a possible cause . Common sense says if you put so much radioactivity into the oceans '' something '' will get damaged ,, right ? What will that be ,, when , or where etc nobody knows . We just know that it CANNOT BE GOOD for the living things to have a radioactive environement ,, now THAT is a fact . The rest is a huge experiment , with the whole earth , thanks to nuclear industry .

But we are discussing ..a condition that is not explainable(presently)..by pathological progression..
It is not something that has presented itself ..by natural occurrence ..or by studied effects of accumulative contamination.

Cobalt-60 has a half-life of 5+ years. The crab will have to live 60 years in that environment to outlive 9.3 half lives to get it's color back, onfortunately it has already lost its genetic patern, and by the way, when cobalt 60 is done it will take the color of the next isotope. It is called the 99% safety of nuclear.

Blue crabs…the same blue appears in the today's picture of lightning http://www.guardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jul/22/internet-sex-weather-lightning-maps-thunderstorms
it shows in the once rare noctilucent clouds, again depicted at http://spaceweather.com, (see today's second picture from top). Again the electric blue is detected in a January image of a volcano,
http://www.dvice.com/2014-1-15/image-day-electric-blue-volcano
in fact it is said that noctilucent clouds were not recorded until after the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883. The blue color has, imo, intensified over time and the clouds have become more frequent.
But electric blue crabs? Could it be that yet another element is becoming radioactive? Surely someone will test with a geiger counter that can measure gamma rays?

Jec,
Good find.
Above-ground testing radioactive releases were detected in levels of Strontium-90 in children's teeth. Fukushima radiation will show up in all forms of life around the planet. Alaska and Greenland will receive trans-Arctic atmospheric transport along with oceanic transport by currents.
The economies of the West need to keep their heads above water at any cost. We are that cost.
The ability of the infrastructure at Fukushima to contain the contents of thousands of tons of fuel rods is severely compromised. The nuclear industries and enabling governments want to conceal this for as long as possible.
Japan can still make trillions selling their technology abroad. Japan must first restart its reactors to prove the "safety" of its nuclear technology.
By the time the evidence is gathered and analyzed, and people begin to understand what has happened, Japan will be militarized and their nuclear industry bailed out.
