Hot SXSW Trailer: Nicolas Cage’s ‘Joe’

David Gordon Green directed Nicolas Cage in the adaptation of Larry Brown’s novel, about an Southern ex-con trying to stay out of trouble. Spoiler alert: He can’t, especially after befriending a hard-luck kid (Tye Sheridan) he tries to protect from an evil father. Sheridan won the Best Newcomer prize for the role at Venice. Gary Hawkins wrote the screenplay. Roadside Attractions nabbed the title in a bidding war during Toronto and is releasing it April 11– but not before Joe has its U.S. Premiere at SXSW on March 13. David Gordon Green Exec Producing ‘Land Ho!’ From Martha Stephens & Aaron Katz

EXCLUSIVE: Directors Martha Stephens (Pilgrim Song, Passenger Pigeons) and Aaron Katz (Cold Weather, Quiet City) first met at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts before launching their film careers. Now the duo have co-written and are co-directing buddy comedy Land Ho! with David Gordon Green, another UNCSA alum, executive producing. Pic follows two ex-brothers-in-law (This Is Martin Bonner‘s Paul Eenhoorn and Eastbound & Down‘s Earl Lynn Nelson) on a road trip through Iceland attempting to reclaim their youth in Reykjavik nightclubs, trendy spas, and rugged campsites. Mynette Louie, Sara Murphy, and Christina Jennings are producing, with Reykjavik-based Vintage Pictures’ Hlin Johannesdottir and Birgitta Björnsdottir co-producing. This is the first film from backer Gamechanger Films, which funds features helmed and co-directed by women. Gamechanger’s Julie Parker Benello, Dan Cogan, Geralyn Dreyfous, and Wendy Ettinger are also executive producers on the pic which is currently filming in Iceland. Emily Ting of Unbound Feet Productions is co-executive producer.

Toronto: Nicolas Cage-Starrer ‘Joe’ Pits Lionsgate/Roadside Against Magnolia

The David Gordon Green-directed Joe is drawing a crowd. Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions has been the frontrunner all day in an auction held by CAA, with Magnolia and Sony Pictures Classics among those in the hunt. Right now, it’s between Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions and Magnolia as the bidding gets into the $2 million range. The film is a contemporary thriller that stars Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan and centers on Joe Ransom, a hard-living, hot-tempered ex-con who becomes a fierce protector of a hard-luck kid who awakens a paternal instinct in the rough loser. It’s based on the novel by Larry Brown and premiered Monday. If I had to guess, I’d put my money on Lionsgate/Roadshow, but it’s premature at this moment to put a bow on this one. Stay tuned.

Toronto: Holly Hunter Joins David Gordon Green’s ‘Manglehorn’

September 6, 2013 (Toronto, Canada) — Academy Award winner Holly Hunter (“Thirteen,” “The Piano”) has signed on to star in David Gordon Green’s drama, “Manglehorn,” financed and produced by Worldview Entertainment. Hunter will play the female lead character opposite Academy Award winner, Al Pacino, in the title role. Chris Messina (“Argo”) and Harmony Korine (“Spring Breakers”) will also star. Green will direct the film, which is based on a screenplay by Paul Logan. Worldview CEO, Christopher Woodrow, and COO, Molly Conners, will produce alongside Lisa Muskat, Derrick Tseng and Green. Principal photography will commence this fall in Austin, Texas.

Venice: David Gordon Green’s ‘Joe’ Bows To Praise For Nicolas Cage

David Gordon Green‘s competition title Joe debuted for the press here in Venice this morning. A serious, sometimes violent story, it’s been well-received on the Lido with star Nicolas Cage getting some very strong notices. He plays the titular character, a good man working hard to stifle inner demons. A chance at redemption, and perhaps a new direction in life, comes in the form of Gary (Tye Sheridan), a 15-year-old whose drifter family has settled nearby. Gordon Green likens the film, based on the novel by Larry Brown, to a Western. (The Worldview Entertainment-backed pic is being handled by CAA for domestic and there were buyers — and applause — at the screenings this morning.)

Joe is the helmer’s 9th film and is “distinct” from the previous ones he’s made, “I think it stands out,” he said today. But he allows that the films in his body of work have “themes that thread them all together like a bizarre quilt.” He and Cage expressed their mutual appreciation during a press conference this afternoon. Gordon Green said that had he been physically able, he would have done backflips when he learned that Cage responded to the script. Cage said he hadn’t seen the finished movie yet, but that he would have done somersaults “naked” to work with Gordon Green. “He is willing to bear his soul. Hot Trailer: ‘Prince Avalanche’

David Gordon Green won the Silver Bear for best director at Berlin for this remake of the Icelandic comedy Either Way. Now the first trailer is out for Prince Avalanche, the character study about a guy (Paul Rudd) and his girlfriend’s brother (Emile Hirsch) who form an unlikely friendship after they  decide to spend the summer of 1988 painting traffic lines on a very rural highway. Lance LeGault also stars in the film produced by Lisa Muskat, Derrick Tseng, Craig Zobel, James Belfer and Green, who also wrote the script. Magnolia Pictures — which picked up Prince Avalanche after its Sundance premiere in January — opens the R-rated pic in theaters August 9, day-and-date with its iTunes debut:

Worldview To Fund David Gordon Green-Helmed ‘Manglehorn’; Al Pacino In Crosshairs?

EXCLUSIVE: Worldview Entertainment has committed to finance and produce Manglehorn, which David Gordon Green will direct from a script he wrote with Paul Logan. I hear they are going out to Al Pacino for the lead role of A.J. Manglehorn, an aging, ordinary guy in a small town who nurses his sick cat, squeezes out a conversation with the local bank teller every Friday, and eats at the same place every day. But there is more to Manglehorn than meets the eye: he’s an ex-con who, 40 years ago, gave up the woman of his dreams for a big “job”. He now obsesses daily over the choices he made. After a dramatic effort to start over, Manglehorn faces a terrifying moment and is unmasked as a guy with a very, very dark past.

This figures to be a hot sales title at Cannes, and in a pitch to potential buyers, Green describes Manglehorn “as the story of a guy who gave up the love of his life for a life of crime and now he regrets it as the world crumbles in front of him. His profession as a locksmith is symbolic of a guy who’s trying to find the key to put his life back together. It’s a love story, the choices you make in your youth and the situations you set up for yourself: you end up sitting alone at the dinner table talking to a cat! Berlin: ‘Child’s Pose’ Wins Golden Bear; David Gordon Green Named Best Director

Wong Kar Wai’s jury gave Romanian film Child’s Pose the top prize Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival this evening. The story follows a mother trying to save her son from prison. In accepting the award, director Călin Peter Netzer spoke of “commercial censorhip against arthouse cinema” and thanked the Berlinale, sales agents and distributors for “bringing arthouse cinema to the public.” David Gordon Green was named Best Director for the well-received Prince Avalanche, a film he remade from the Icelandic movie Either Way, transporting the action to Texas. Magnolia acquired the film in Sundance. The hotly-tipped Paulina Garcia took the Best Actress prize for her turn in Gloria which Roadside Attractions acquired earlier in the festival. And, Nazif Mujic was named Best Actor for Danis Tanovic’s Jury Grand Prix winner An Episode In The Life Of An Iron Picker.

While the competition roster at this year’s Berlin Film Festival left some cold, the last two years have produced a foreign language Oscar winner (2011′s A Separation) and two foreign language Oscar nominees (this year’s A Royal Affair and War Witch). And another film that won a prize in 2012, Sister, was also shortlisted for the foreign language Oscar this year. So, it will be interesting to watch the international careers of this year’s winners to see if the trend continues. Berlin Film Festival Completes Official Roster, Adds River Phoenix Film ‘Dark Blood’

The Berlin Film Festival has rounded out the official lineup, with 24 films in the program. Of those, 19 will compete for Golden and Silver Bears. Titles added to the previously announced films include the late River Phoenix’s last film, Dark Blood, and Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight, both screening out of competition, and David Gordon Greene’s Prince Avalanche in competition. Prince Avalanche and Before Midnight are premiering in Sundance. Berlin runs from February 7-17. The full list of additions is below:

Sony Pictures In Talks For ‘Little House On The Prairie’ Feature

EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures is in negotiations to turn Little House On The Prairie into a feature film that David Gordon Green will direct with Abi Morgan writing the script. Scott Rudin will produce with Trip Friendly. The deal hasn’t happened yet, but they are working toward giving the pioneer family a big screen incarnation.

Little House On The Prairie is based on the semi-autobiographical classic children’s book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder written between 1932 and 1943 about farm life in the late 19th Century American West. The books formed the basis for a TV series that ran from 1974-1983 and starred Michael Landon, and Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls Wilder. Morgan, repped by CAA and Independent Talent Group, last scripted the Steve McQueen-directed Michael Fassbender-starrer Shame, and the Phyllida Lloyd-directed The Iron Lady, which starred Meryl Streep. As for Green, he’s been focusing on comedies with Pineapple Express, The Sitter, Your Highness and Eastbound & Down, and is repped by CAA and Gotham Group.

Toronto: Worldview Funds ‘Joe’ With Nic Cage Starring & David Gordon Green Directing

Nicolas Cage Joe MovieWorldview Entertainment will finance and produce the David Gordon Green-directed Joe, a Southern drama to star Nicolas Cage. Gary Hawkins adapted from the novel by Larry Brown. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in early November in Texas. London-based WestEnd Films will handle international sales and introduce the film to foreign buyers this week at the Toronto Film Festival. CAA, which packaged and arranged financing for Joe, represents the film’s domestic distribution rights. Joe is the story of an ex-con who becomes the unlikeliest of role models to 15-year-old Gary Jones, the oldest child of a homeless family ruled by a drunk, worthless father. David Gordon Green-Directed Redo Of ‘Suspiria’ Set Up By Crime Scene Pictures

BREAKING: The Dario Argento 1977 horror thriller Suspiria has been set for a remake that will be directed by Pineapple Express helmer David Gordon Green from a script he wrote with Chris Gebert. The search is on for Suzie, the young protagonist who travels to Europe to attend a world renowned school. After a series of brutal murders, the young American student learns that the academy is a front for something way more sinister than education. The original had a surreal, psychedelic tone that involved the supernatural, witches and a whole lotta blood.

The remake is backed by Crime Scene Pictures, whose partners Adam Ripp and Rob Paris are joining forces with producers Francesco Melzi d’Eril (Hotel Rwanda) from Memo Films and Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love) under his First Sun film banner to produce and finance the remake. Rizal Risjad, Silvia Fendi and Philip Elway will executive produce and Lisa Muskat will co-produce. Wild Bunchwill sell foreign at Cannes in May and CAA will make the domestic distribution deal. Production begins in September.

“We love the style and energy of the original film – and David’s script brilliantly updates the world, presenting a rare opportunity to create an elegant, classic horror film,” Crime Scene partners Ripp and Paris said in a statement. Sony Acquires ‘Q’ For David Gordon Green

Sony Pictures is acquiring the Evan Mandery novel Q for David Gordon Green to write and direct, with Matt Tolmach producing. Published by Harper Collins, the novel is about a man who’s visited by a future version of himself and told not to marry the love of his life. He agrees and spends the rest of his life trying to undo that dumb choice and find the only woman he ever loved. Tolmach has history with Green; when he was a Sony exec, they worked together on Pineapple Express.

Jonah Hill Joins Stiller & Vaughn In Fox Pic

Newly svelte Jonah Hill (almost unrecognizably so) has been formally set to star alongside Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn in Neighborhood Watch, the Akiva Schaffer-directed Fox comedy. Shawn Levy is producing through his 21 Laps banner. Hill will next be seen starring opposite Brad Pitt in Moneyball, which premieres next month at the Toronto Film Festival, and he stars in the David Gordon Green-directed Fox comedy The Sitter. He’ll look like a different actor in Neighborhood Watch, because you can see he has slimmed down quite a bit. He’s repped by WME.

Johnny Knoxville And Patton Oswalt Play Squabbling Sibs In Big Beach Comedy

EXCLUSIVE: Johnny Knoxville and Patton Oswalt have signed on to star in an untitled comedy that will be directed by Todd Rohal and financed by Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf’s Big Beach Films. Knoxville and Oswalt will play battling brothers who attempt to honor their ailing father by taking a troop of boys on a camping trip. It all goes awry. Rob Riggle, Maura Tierney and Patrice O’Neal also star.

Rohal, who originally wrote the script under the title Scout Master, most recently directed The Catechism Cataclysm. Production on the new comedy starts this week. Turtletaub and Saraf are producing with Lisa Muskat, David Gordon Green is exec producer, and Big Beach’s Michael Clark and John Hodges are overseeing production. Big Beach produced the Paul Rudd comedy Our Idiot Brother, which The Weinstein Co launches on Aug. 26. Rohal, Knoxville and Oswalt are repped by CAA, Knoxville’s managed by 3 Arts and Oswalt by Generate.

20th TV Signs Pod Deal With Rough House

20th Century Fox Television has inked a pod deal with Rough House Pictures. Under the one-year pact, Rough House principals David Gordon Green, Jody Hill, Danny McBride and head Matt Reilly will develop animated and live-action comedies targeted for broadcast networks. This marks the first network TV deal for the company. Hill and McBride co-created the HBO live-action comedy series Eastbound & Down, now in production on its third season, and Green created the upcoming MTV animated comedy series Good Vibes. Additionally, Rough House is producing the Comedy Central comedy pilot Black Jack starring Ving Rhames. “We as a studio are always looking to be in business with people who we think have unique and specific voices, and the group from Rough House have that,” 20th TV chairman Gary Newman said. On the feature side, Pineapple Express helmer Green is directing the forthcoming Jonah Hill comedy The Sitter for 20th Century Fox Studios.

Comedy Central Nears Pilot Order For Comedy From Director David Gordon Green

EXCLUSIVE: Comedy Central is finalizing a deal for a pilot order to Black Jack. The single-camera comedy, directed and exec produced by Pineapple Express helmer David Gordon Green, hails from Rough House, Green’s production company with Danny McBride, Jody Hill and Matt Reilly. Black Jack, written by Michael Starrbury, centers on Black Jack who, after 20 years as the most kick-ass special ops agent the US government has had on its payroll, finally goes too far and is de-commissioned. He’s sent home to begin the most treacherous mission he’s ever faced — normal life. The order is expected to be cast-contingent, with the pilot going to production if the network finds the right actor for the lead. Green, Starrbury, McBride, Hill and Reilly, all repped by CAA, are exec producing. Green most recently  created the upcoming MTV animated series Good Vibes and helmed the feature comedy Your Highness starring McBride, Natalie Portman, James Franco and Zooey Deschanel, which opens April 8. Green also serves as consulting producer/director on McBride’s HBO comedy series Eastbound & Down.
Black Jack is the latest pilot order by Comedy Central, which recently greenlighted Playing with Guns, starring Danny Masterson and Ethan Suplee; Waiting…, based on the 2005 indie; an untitled comedy from comedian Matt Braunger and writer Brent Forrester; and an animated pilot from production company ShadowMachine.

Berlin: ARC Entertainment Acquires Medieval Actioner ‘Ironclad’

ARC Entertainment has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the ContentFilm International medieval action thriller Ironclad. ARC made the deal in collaboration with Barry Gordon’s XLrator Media, and will release the film theatrically in June. Directed by Jonathan English, the film is the true story of a motley crew of battle-hardened warriors who go to war to defend their country’s freedom.

Rome‘s James Purefoy, Brian Cox, Derek Jacobi, Kate Mara, Paul Giamatti and Jason Flemyng star with Jamie Foreman, Aneurin Barnar, Mackenzie Crook, Vladimir Kulich and Charles Dance. English wrote the script with Erick Kastel and Stephen McDool, and Mythic International Entertainment’s Rick Benattar, Andrew Curtis and English produced it.

“The partnership between ARC Entertainment and XLator is the perfect team to distribute Ironclad,” said ContentFilm’s Jamie Carmichael. ContentFilm most recently generated the Ian Palmer-directed documentary Knuckle that premiered at Sundance. The film, about a longstanding dispute between two clans in Ireland that gets periodically settled through bare knuckle brawls, came away with a remake rights deal CAA made at HBO for a potential series from the Eastbound & Down team of Danny McBride, Jody Hill and David Gordon Green of Rough House Pictures.
