It might have been an early call time for her interview on the ABC's Good Morning America.

But when Dame Helen Mirren emerged at the New York studio on Monday there wasn’t an inch of bed hair or tiredness in sight.

The 69-year-old looked effortlessly chic in a colourful tapestry dress which featured a playful hemline skimming just above the knees.

The talented actress kept warm with a soft white cardigan and she accessorised the look with white pumps, a chunky yellow bracelet, oval-shaped sunglasses and a Louis Vuitton handbag.

Helen was on the show to promote her upcoming film The Hundred-Foot Journey, where she plays temperamental French chef Madame Mallory.

Despite being a self-confessed Francophile, Helen admitted to the show’s host she was nervous about taking on the role.

‘There is a particular kind of Frenchness, so I hope I’m not insulting the French,’ the Academy Award Winner confessed. In fact Dame Helen said she was so besotted with the culture that she moved to France in her late twenties.

‘I wanted to be a French actress, I had a dream of being a French actress,’ she said.

But when it comes to her own skills in the kitchen, her cooking isn't as fine-tuned as her acting.

‘I’m very good at certain things. I make absolutely brilliant Marmite on toast, I do a very good baked beans on toast, I do a fabulous tomatoes on toast... I’m not a great chef, no,’ she giggled.

It’s been a busy year for the legendary actress, who has been married to actor Taylor Hackford since 1997.

Helen is currently filming Woman In Gold, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Katie Holmes, and will soon commence work on the thriller Eye in the Sky and the drama Trumbo. Hard at work! Helen has been filming the Woman In Gold alongside Ryan Reynolds and Katie Holmes
