Liam Payne is never one to let Twitter criticism go unanswered.

Finding the funny side of recent accusations that he'd put on a few pounds around the middle, the 20-year-old One Direction singer puffed out his cheeks and headed straight to social media to hit back at the so-called 'fat' jibes in the best way he knows how.

In a photo post on his Instagram page, the singer proudly showed off the inflated gut at the centre of all the controversy - with the help of a little extra stuffing.

He captioned the photo: 'I mean OH MY GOD I'm just so fat these days I think I need help! quick someone take the cookie jar.'

With an ear piece hanging over one shoulder, the singer had clearly just stepped off tour rehearsals for One Direction's Where We Are tour, to answer back at the attention his gut had been getting.

Liam received a torrent of abuse about his weight after he was pictured shirtless on a yacht looking decidedly different from his usual refined self, despite being at the centre of a highly-disciplined tour schedule with the band.

Last summer, Liam could boast a 6-pack beach bod in Australia, but this year, finding himself in a happy new relationship and now a regular smoker, the singer has been accused of letting himself go.

To finally put the 'fat' jibes to bed, Liam proved that he was a 'normal weight' according to British standards by showing his BMI was a mere 22.8.

Sharing the evidence with his 2.1 million Instagram followers, Liam wrote:

'Is it wrong to be normal? Or do I have to look like an Olympic swimmer just to get your approval into the cool kids?'

Liam has just spent the week enjoying a romantic yacht holiday in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, France with his girlfriend, Sophia Smith.

Referring to his girlfriend in his hit back post, Liam continued:

'Can I accept that the person I truly love thinks I'm the coolest kid in town anyway? Think I'll vote the second one ;)'

Liam, 20, was no doubt missing his sunshine break with girlfriend Sophia when he landed straight back down to reality the very next weekend for the start of a new leg on the band's tour.

One Direction kicked off the North American leg of their Where We Are world tour with a bang at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on Friday night.

And hanging on his Toronto balcony the next morning, the shirtless hunk scowled at the cameras as he lit up his morning fag and listened to his mobile phone messages ahead of the boy band's second gig in the city.

After 15 minutes of smoking in silence, the brooding Midnight Memories singer then lit up a second cigarette, wearing nothing but navy tracksuit bottoms that showed off his tan.

Liam and Sophia have been dating since 2013, confirming they were back on in June after a brief break.

The couple packed on the PDA as they enjoyed the Mediterranean sun on board their yacht earlier that week, cuddling up on the deck and splashing around together in the water.

They have known each other for much of their lives, having grown up in Wolverhampton together.

However, the lovesick singer couldn't pine over Sophia for long, since the boys were right back on stage performing in front of a 54,000-strong crowd that night.

The band - also formed of Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan - took time out from belting out their chart-topping hits to thank their loyal fans for their ongoing support.

According to MTV, Zayn told the crowd: 'It’s pretty weird and pretty amazing. Thank you so much we wouldn’t be able to do it without you.'
