Reese Witherspoon was dressed in a summery chic ensemble as she soaked up the sun on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old beauty donned a casual yet stylish ensemble while out and about in Brentwood, California.

The Legally Blonde star wore a red, white and blue patterned top tucked into a pair of high-waisted black shorts while in the city's near-90-degree-Fahrenheit heat.

She teamed the youthful outfit with a pair of red strappy sandals and made sure to protect her eyes with a pair of large, black sunglasses.

Reese accessorised the look with a necklace featuring a circular pendant, gold watch and bracelet, stud earrings, and a black leather bag draped over her shoulder.

The Walk The Line actress had her signature platinum blonde tresses tied back in a messy bun and had natural, complementary make-up on her face.

Though her husband Jim Toth and three children were not seen with her on the outing, she seemed to be content with flying solo as she smiled while crossing the street in the affluent neighbourhood.

Reese had lunch with a gal pal at The Larder before stopping at a news stand.

She spent some time perusing the myriad of magazines on the shelves.

The celebrity eventually picked out an armful, including Homes And Gardens and Domino, before making her way back to the car.

Reese has been upping the style stakes recently; she was spotted in business attire as she stepped out of her office in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.

Clad in a pencil skirt and checkered top, the blonde beauty put a stylish, professional twist on her business-friendly ensemble with a pair of pink peep toe heels and a gold necklace.

Next up for the busy actress, Reese has several films awaiting release including the drama The Good Lie and a dark comedy entitled Inherent Vice, which is based on the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name.

The Good Lie will hit theatres on October 3, and will see the actress star opposite Corey Stoll and Sarah Baker as Carrie, a woman who cares for three refugees from Sudan after they move to America.

Carrie then attempts to reunite one of the boys with their only surviving sister, who is still in Sudan.
